What is the purpose? I have to lean to the unshaded area while reading the morning paper.

They do serve a purpose to not blind you from across the room when looking at the bulb, as well as spread the light through the room.

I was of the same mind. Got rid of the lampshade for awhile. After being blinded over and over looking directly at the bulb, I put them back on. If you want mosr light emmisions from your lamp without the blinding get some lamp shades that are just slightly opaque that will still let out more light while still shading the direct glare of the bulb.

Change to a 3 way LED bulb. Bright white light gives better contrast.

I'm not sure that was have any lamps in our house.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.
