We will be taking a long road trip next year and plan on crossing the Canadian border...
Anyone taken firearms across the border?
Any issues?
I've read that we can take up to three.
Thanks,

I know a guy that lives near Napanee, I'll see if he knows. He collects old swords, and rifles, was in the Can. Military.

This was probably 20 years ago

I had a family member cross the Canadian border with a pistol in his RV

They found it, he went to jail

Last time I went we had to go through a Homeland Security check here to start, don't know if that is still required. Our outfitter recommended only bringing two guns. We were moose hunting, but also would have the opportunity to shoot some ptarmigan. The lady that checked me at the border could not understand why it took two different guns to shoot moose and ptarmigan, thought she was joking at first, but no she was serious. I would suggest having a specific purpose for each gun you try to take across. It was very obvious she did not like hunters.

The biggest problem Americans have is forgetting about a handgun they have with them. People from states such as Texas, which allow concealed weapons, get snagged quite often.

Mirrors my experiences.

I concluded they automatically key in on Texans or they(the boarder patrol) just don’t like us very much as we always got “special treatment.”

Thanks,

We did it. They saw Texas plates and asked if we had any firearms. Told them that we took them out since we were planning on entering Canada .....spent the next three hours waiting while they went through everything in the car....then asked me why we had 3 laptops....same reason we have three cellphones....my wife’s personal, my personal, and my work....

F Canada...Won’t be back

Why not, they prohibit alcohol there also?

They don't allow for entry if you have one on your record. If it's been five years you can apply for rehabilitation and be able to enter but you have to initiate that well in advance of your trip. There's another way, but I don't know how that works, something about a temporary residence permit. Rehabilitation is one time TRPs are for every trip.

They once made me dump out 24 dozen nightcrawlers into the river because they were in dirt instead of newspaper. And my dad once "forgot" to declare a bottle of Crown and they went crazy when they found it smashing his bags with a bat. They have issues.

They drink a ton, they just don’t want criminals and drunk drivers to enter their country. As Mike said, there are ways to get entry with a DUI, but it’s a lot easier if you go through the process before you try to enter.

The duck guide we use guides hunts up there September-October and he says there are usually 2 guys a year who think they will slip through.

Too bad we don't enforce the same rules on our Southern border.

I believe it. They don’t mess around though, from what I’ve heard.

no pistols, no dwi on your record (it can be expunged easier than getting the paperwork done), and only one carton of cigarettes.

they will not ask questions if they find a pistol or you don't declare rifles, you will go to jail and you may or may not get a phone call.

last time I crossed at sweetgrass montana they took about 4 hrs. to "inspect" my truck/trailer, you really don't wanna make any smartass comments either. grin

What if you fly into Canada, still get the third degree at the airport?

There’s a procedure with a form that serves as your permit. Just fill it out, pay the $25 and it’s no big deal. Must have a purpose for having it (like hunting). Same procedure whether in vehicle or at airport. Can’t just bring one through just because you want to. Think about it for a second and it might make sense why that’s the rule. Their country - their rules.

No handguns.

Gave them the psperworhI have never had a problem this 4 times I have hunted in Canada. Declared my rifle, gave them the paperwork, paid the 30 dollar fee and I was good to go.

Canadians are an odd bunch, but they live in a Country with a lot of hunting opportunities.

Thank you all for the comments...
We may want to rethink taking firearms, we don't have any scheduled hunting trips, just taking firearms for protection while out on the road....

And that Sir, in addition to our last experience entering the Socialist Republic of Canada, is why we will continue to keep our firearms and forego spending our hard earned dollars in their country...
