This is the trip that almost didn't happen.
I am usually up at 4:30am to get the boat ready, hook it up, get gas, and stop for donuts. At 4:30am I decided to sleep in this morning. I was just tired and with all the rain and the gates open at the dam I figured fishing would suck so I went back to sleep.
About 6:15am I talked myself into going out to the lake and prove to myself I should have stayed in bed. I got on the water just before 8am and right off the bat I hit a log running to my first spot. That's a clear area to run but with all the rain I am sure there was a floater just below the surface and I found it. Thankfully I don't see any obvious damage.
Tried my first spot and caught one itty bitty Crappie.
Second spot not much better.
Third spot it was on!! Once I figured out how they were setting up on the structure I could catch a Crappie dang near every cast! I could have kept that up all day but I had my limit and it was still early so I switched my focus to Sandies.
I ended up going back to my second spot and trying that again. My graph was almost blacked out there were so many fish! I figured it was shad since they were spawning but I grabbed a rod and got a Sandie on my first cast. That went on every cast for the next 4 hours. Best of all I had them all to myself for about 2 hours then I saw a guy on a Kayak coming my way. He saw me catching them every single cast but was very respectful and kept his distance which is unheard of now days. I watched him for about 30 minutes fishing about 50 yards away and didn't see him catch a thing. I trolled over to him and told him there were plenty of fish stacked where I was at and he wouldn't hurt a thing if he wanted to fish beside me. He was appreciative and pretty soon he was whackin them too.
I ended up leaving them biting like that because I simply had enough. I had a limit of Crappie and limit of Sandbass and needed to get them cleaned so I left about 1:30pm. I have no idea how many fish I caught but simple math tells me I was around 300 when I gave up. Probably one of the top 3 fishing days of my life!
Just goes to show you that you never know which days will be good and which will be bad! You gotta just go and find out!
