Anyone use a drone to check what is at the feeder before driving to it? Or use one for scouting new areas?

I recently got a drone and have started flying it to the feeders to see what is there before driving there. Also to see if the stands are still upright after a severe storms have rolled thru.

Looking at the video, I have started to notice areas that I had not walked thru before. Areas that I might want to check out for possible bow hunting spot.

I also thought it might be great to look for areas where critters have been hanging out, etc.

Sounds like you must have a permit if any wildlife are involved at all. Even pigs based on the TPWD link.

So it is illegal to take a photograph of wildlife from a drone? That has to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen!

Wow! The TPWD regs are way more restrictive than I would have ever guessed. As I read this, if a person is using a drone mounted camera in anyway over hunting land, and happen to capture wildlife, they are in violation of the act. That is astounding! I get hunt, drive, capture, but count or photograph?

Think about the ramifications to real estate agents who often post aerial photos of farming/hunting land on their websites. If they happen to fly over and get deer in a video, are they in violation?

I am good on the FAA side but WOW. I had not seen that TPWD link.

I wonder how these hunting shows get past this permit requirement since it looks like Federal guidelines specify the states may only issue these permits for the management of wildlife such as Trap Transport and Transplant (TTT) or depredation species and certain predator species.

I hope a bird doesnt fly by when your kid is flying their drone in the backyard.

I'm going to make up a new word here - [censored]-a-nin-a-ty.
It's perfectly legal for GOOGLE to drive down my street and take streetview pictures that show my family sitting on our porch.
It's perfectly legal for anyone to fly a drone over my back yard and take pictures of kids in the pool.
But it's illegal to do either of those things if there's a wild rabbit on the lawn at the time?
Assaninaty.

I have a friend who flies his to locate pigs and then stalks them. He posts his videos on FB hog hunting pages. Never had an issue. He does real estate photos as well for ranches.

Whatever the legalities are or are not, I wouldn’t use a drone to check out areas just prior to hunting to help me find out where the animals are. For the same reason I wouldn’t fly an airplane to spot animals, land, and then shoot them. For pre-hunt scouting I see no issues.

Unless it’s hogs.

Have used a drone to check hog traps. Don’t care if it’s not legal.

My idea was to put a drone up over a duck or goose decoy spread...to get the bird's eye view...spot any issues and fix them before the birds show up. The way i read the regs that should be okay...trying it this coming waterfowl season.

So, in Texas the show "Deadliest Catch" could not be filmed because 50% of the show is filmed by using drones and almost all of those shots show wildlife such as birds flying around the boats.
So stupid......
I can take a picture of a deer with my phone,
I can take a picture of a deer with my camera
I can take a picture of a deer with my trail camera,
I can take a picture of a deer while flying in a helicopter,
BUT, I can not take a picture of a deer with a drone.

Agreed....talk with your state legislators. This needs to be changed

Same as the guys filming hunting shows on public land, permits are required.
Many states have laws against drone usage for scouting wildlife, make sure you know what is legal if you take it out of state.
Here is Wyoming's law on drones and scouting or hunting: https://wgfd.wyo.gov/News/Game-and-Fish-New-rules-on-scouting-for-game-anim

The TPWD is evidently trying to keep the "hunt" in hunting.

Let's face it, using technology that is available to today, you could mount a rifle in a box stand and have it controlled remotely. A drone or even a cell camera could be used to alert you when an animal is at your feeder. Then it becomes a simple matter of taking aim and firing a shot with the rifle from your mobile device or desktop. Pay someone to go and retrieve it for you and you can have a trophy buck delivered to your doorstep without ever leaving the house.

I'm sure there are those who have already considered offering such a service, for a price of course. Thankfully, the TPWD is doing its best to stay ahead of new and emerging technology.

Just imagine a world in which your neighboring competition for that trophy buck you've been seeing on your camera are 10 guys waiting for their phones to alert them he's at their feeder, all of them ready to take a remote-control shot.

Yes, true "Virtual Hunting" makes for a great birthday present for that boy or girl who enjoys staying inside and playing video games. And they'll even get a set of antlers they can hang on a wall.

So....you can tear up the hogs from a helicopter with your weapon of choice, but do not take a picture of one with a drone. Hmmmmm

Probably because you're actually in the helicopter firing the shots and not sitting on a couch somewhere shooting them with a mobile app.

As I described earlier, the TPWD is probably trying to restrict the use of devices and equipment that can be used to create live,Virtual Hunting experiences using a technology known as "Telematics".

I mean, can't you just see that Hill Country landowner saying he/she should be able to use his/her land "any damn way they please" and sell 350 virtual day hunts every year.

Wow. That's news to me. Any idea when this went into effect?

I haven't used my drone in sometime. Tends to spook any wildlife I've encountered with it. I can understand the necessity of the rules for "hunt, catch, take" - but taking pictures.... that's a bit too far.

Big difference in hunting with a drone vs. checking out a property, checking traps, inspecting storm damage, or many other legitimate uses of a drone.

As I understand it, the way the law is written I can't use my drone for any of those things without a permit....stupid IMHO... 2cents

Agreed. However, TPWD officers don't know if the drone is taking photos or streaming live video for virtual hunting purposes, hence the permit.

While the equipment isn't cheap, think of the money to be made selling literally hundreds of virtual hunts at $300 or $400 a pop.

Be interesting to apply these types of similar parameters of law to fishing. No side scan, no down imaging, no hook and look cameras... I think bass fishermen would revolt.
