Has anyone shot a deer or hog with a 110 VMAX out of a .308 or 30-06? I picked up a box, and they shoot pretty well out of my 30-06 with 60 grains of Varget, and they’re running about 3475fps.
It looks like I could get them to ~3200 out of a 16” AR-10, which seems like it would make a dandy HD load as well.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

No, use a bullet designed for hunting deer & pig, controlled expansion & penetration. use varmint bullets for varmints, thin jacket and designed to fragment on impact.

Not sure about the v-max. It surely wouldn't be my preference.
I recently bought a 30-06 at a benefit auction, was hoping they would let me get the gun in a different caliber for my son, but was a no go. My plan is to load 125 grain NBT's over 30-40 grains of H4895. Have used similar charge in 270 win and 110 grain prohunters for reduced recoil loads with good success on deer and hogs. Might try some of the 100-110 grain offerings instead of the 125, but it was the first bullet that came to mind.

Don’t listen to anybody that reads the cover of a box. They work bad azz. Most of my kills have been with 55 gr vmax. Recently we’ve got a few pigs with 95 vmax out of a 6.5 creed. It anchors stuff right there. It makes a mess of the insides

Just want to try something different I guess.

It will certainly kill a deer. The bullet will make a mess, though. Not the most optimum bullet for hunting, but it will work.

I killed a pile of stuff with that bullet, .300 BO.
Result is kinda like a shotgun went off inside, after it penetrated a few inches. May not be what it's intended for but works great and I got really good accuracy out of it.
Been a few years, I started buying 125 Gr. SST form Chad.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Shot a doe a few years back with a 110 grain V-max out of a .300 Whisper (12" pistol). Considerably less velocity than a .308 or -06, and did a great job. It was a neck shot from 15 yards out of a tree stand, so take that for what it's worth.

A guy I used to shoot with loved the 110 V-max in his 308 pushed right at 3200 fps. It made messes out of coyotes. Nasty wound channels. On a deer, it should kill it, but it will have limited penetration and heavy carnage at the entry area. I would recommend stepping up to at least a 125 grain for the added weight and better bullet construction.

At those velocities you are asking for serious trouble using that bullet for deer. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow. Just hope it's not on the trophy of a lifetime. As for HD, yeah, I bet it makes a helluva mess of a perp. Rock on.

That's so awesome. I've been thinking about reloading for my 30-06. I might spare some of my precious varget for this. Not for deer but just because.

I've killed a ton of whitetails (culls and does) and 100's of hogs with a .222 shooting 50 gr. VMAX Superformance ammo from Hornady. But I don't "hunt" with it. I shoot culls in the head or neck and it is devastating. Even killed a cow elk with it. But it's a varmint bullet and I would not use it to hunt whitetails as a primary round.

Best movie ever made, says so on the cover!
Loaded some 90 grain speer tnt hp's in my 270 win to about 3400 fps. Shot a hog with it. I aimed for the neck with a solid rest and all the time in the world to make the shot. it fell kicked a bit, I thought It was all over but the dragging it to the gut pile. Looked up a minute later to see it drag itself to its feet and hobble off. They will vaporize a rabbit or a crow though.

Why do people keep asking this question. The V in V-max stands for varmint. i.e. - coyotes, bobcats, prairie dogs, etc. This bullet is NOT designed for deer or pigs!

LOL and neither is the A-tip, A-max, ELDM, or any other variety of bullets. Do they work? yeah most of them will kill stuff. Are they my preference? Like you, no.
Personally I think as you increase range/decrease impact velocity, the construction of the bullet matters less and less till you reach the point of insufficient velocity to reliably expand.

Why you running way?!?!?! Perfect response. And that deer is a nuisance to me. I get very annoyed I'm not already eating it.

Come back here! ...OK. valid point. Pigs are varmints, but still bigger and thicker skinned that what the v-max is designed for. I prefer to use a bullet that is designed for penetration and expansion when talking about pigs and deer.
