All this time in Pecos, and I finally made it down there. I should have done this much sooner. We drove down 118 to Ft. Davis, then up 17 to Balmorhea. Stopped off at Madera Canyon to do some hiking. A few miles north of Ft. Davis, we saw an aoudad ewe on her hind legs, eating on some desert plant, just off the highway, about 20’ up a rock ledge. I slammed on the brakes and whipped around. We found two groups of ewes and youngin’s. Probably 40-50, total. We watched them for awhile, and they watched us. It made our day.

Down in Madera Canyon, we also ran into several mule deer, a few javelina, and a couple foreign exchange students. And, we saw a whitetail off the highway just north of Ft. Davis. I didn’t know there were whitetail in the area.

Probably a 'Sierra del carmen' whitetail. Almost like a 'Coues' deer. Prefer higher elevations than regular WT. Great pics, Sneaky.

I love that area, especially the road from Ft Davis up to the observatory. Makes you feel like you are in mountains of New Mexico or far Western/Eastern Colorado. Virtually ever time we have camped in the state park their in Ft Davis, we have run into a descent group of Aoudad. Great pics.

The Fort Davis area is just another of the of the great wonders of Texas. Camped a lot at the Fort Davis park, always saw a lot o wild life.

Unless it was up high in the mountains it probably was not a Carmen mountain whitetail. For all intents and purposes they are pretty much a coues.

If it was in the lower country it was more than likely just a reg. Whitetail. They are in the area.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

The whitetail was down lower. Thing was tiny, too.

Next time you go to Fort Davis go to the state park and go to Indian Lodge for lunch or dinner. If you tell the park ranger you are going to eat at the Lodge and you can get in free. Might as well also drive up on Look Out Point that overlooks the old Fort Davis.
