Probably. They switched to steel mid ‘98. The tractor is a ‘98 model.

Well it’s an aluminum motorcycle engine so it’s not too heavy. And I’ve got an expert mech beside me.

This won’t be a total rebuild. Just enough to replace the cam. I expect a stripped plastic cam gear and maybe a couple bent pushrods.

This is my strong hunch. But we have to do this to confirm.

Then we do this if confirmed.

I’m not giving up on this tractor. Never seen one run better or longer. Fix this and it’ll run another 22 years.

I have rebuild a few engines and enjoy the instant gratification it provides. In my present garage too, so I’ve got everything we need right there.

Cast, I'm a Deere fan. I've got a 1977 4430 (130 HP), a 2005 260 Skidsteer (80 HP) and a 2005 ZTR with a Kawasaki engine. They've all been very good to me. I don't blame you one bit for fixing this tractor. up

I took the 445 to the dealer last year for the cheap service deal they offered. When it pulled in their barn and shut down everything stopped while the guys gathered around it. It’s been garage kept so it still is in very good shape. They loved it.

Just be sure to measure the inner bearing that the cam journals ride in, Kawasaki mostly used the bare aluminum from the block as the bearing..

You ever took apart a Honda SOHC single cylinder engine? Talk about over kill for a lawnmower

My Dad’s sheered the pin on his Craftsman mower. B&S engine. I thought that flywheel would NEVER come off. Broke a puller hook on one set, had to by another beefier one. Crank crank crank then POP! roflmao

Not your typical mower engine. Twenty four hp Kawasaki engine.

We have valve strikes on both sides. Or just valve rub. Just enough to remove carbon. Matching marks on exhaust valves. Am I concerned beyond checking for bent valve stems. Top right quadrant. Silver line. I rubbed the mark on the other piston and it pretty much wiped away. No metal impression.

I’ll tell you what! If I didn’t know better, from looking at all the plastic gears in this engine, I’d be thinking that it’s a POC. The water pump drive gear fell apart on us too. I’m replacing them all.

My JD Tech buddy says the marks are ok. Just check for leaking valves using the antifreeze leak test on the upside down heads.

Those plastic gears don't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about the Kawasaki engine on my ZTR.

Well, as I said earlier, this thing racked 690 hours over 20+ years and this is the second time it quit. Run it like you stole it. I ran this one over 60 acres of native grasses before I bought the 4720 to do that job. I really took it out of its element into those virgin grasslands. Those plastic gears held up.

Your engine won’t have a plastic cam gear unless it’s an old ‘98 or earlier engine. Find the bar code sticker on the engine.

Mine is a BS01 model. The parts guy can tell you if you have plastic gears.

I still need to organize. There’s a nice assortment of tools scattered in that mess.
