I don’t really hunt them, and we don’t have much in the way of numbers. However, today I stumbled across two really stupid gobblers that couldn’t figure out the hen ditched them. They ran around in circles for five minutes while I eyed them at 100 yards. Good birds, 9-10” beards.

Would it have been kosher to shoot one with my 6.8? It’s all I had with me.

Rio gobblers are legal in Texas with the rifle, Eastern birds are shotgun ot archery only. Lubbock area turkeys are rio sub species so your rifle would eb legal for them

I was in Mills County but they were Rios. I guess I was wondering more about whether you should only hunt spring turkeys with a shotgun.

Depends on who you ask, it’s 100% legal. Ray Sasser would say your taking the fun out of it.

Yeah, and that was half why I didn’t shoot one. I also didn’t really want to pluck one yesterday! I guess next year I may try calling some if they’re going to be around. But again, we don’t have big numbers, it might be like fishing a large lake with only a few fish in it. A lot of work for not much result.

I hunt turkeys with a rifle, usually a .22 mag and not anything bigger. Aim higher on the chest or you are going to blow that thing away.

When did it change that you can shoot turkey in the spring with a rifle? Last I remember it was shotgun only in the spring and only males. In the fall both rifles and shotguns allowed as well as both sexes. I hunt East Texas now so turkeys are a thing of the past...

Never been illegal to hunt with a rifle in the hill country in my life time. Maybe that is an East Texas county reg.

I remember seeing it in the annual when we hunted out west around Vernon and Wichita Falls.
