I know everyone will have their own opinion, but give yours. What is your recommendation for best hog gun, and why?
I'm in the market for a semi-auto that I can use for hog hunting. So what your suggestion for best all round rifle, considering how lethal, cost, versatility, and all other factors?

6.8mm-semi auto-easy follow up shots
Of course, this is like asking what is the best truck. I have a Chevy & soon, someone will be along to tell me it's a POS, XYZ is the best.

I'm lovin' my 7.62 X 39 that I built a few years ago, and that's the caliber that would be my recommendation to you. Ammo is cheap and plentiful, so you get a lot of trigger time in without breaking the bank. I hand load my hunting rounds and buy the cheap ammo to keep my trigger time up where it belongs.

In a semi auto i would probably go Ar10 in 308. If accuracy wasn't a huge concern i might look at Remington 7400 in 3006 with an 18" barrel as well. Both are fairly inexpensive, both fire a cartridge that is stout enough to do considerable damage even with marginal hits (running pig), and both are already ugly, so yo won't be too concerned if you beat them up. I would lean heavily towards the AR 10 though

where is the best place to get an AR 10 308? and what brands should i look for? For reasonable priced ones DPMS or Palmetto State, You can buy them at Buds guns or PSA. Those will do most of what most people do, the sky is the limit from there, on the higher end i like JP, but i own a DPMS haha

Love the six8 but the AR10 is hard to beat. If you're not worried about the extra weight you won't be disappointed.

6.8 spc 12.5 bbl with pistol brace and suppressor. Especially if stalking and being mobile is the way you prefer to hunt.

I spend most of my time behind a 224 Valkyrie but would recommend a 6.8 spc...does it all...well, with quick follow up shots and light weight compared to the 308. If I was allowed only 1 caliber it would be this.

Best semi-auto hog gun. Loaded question but IMHO the best hog gun is large enough to make a one shot kill and in your hands. As long as it is accurate and the shooter knows the limits of both weapon and themselves that's all you need

Im liable to get beat like a dead horse but Ive killed many with an assortment
By far and it kinda fits your mode my favorite is the Savage A17
Cheap ammo, accurate, theres 0 climb, semi auto...I just cant beat it for a challenge and still fun
I shot one Tuesday evening at 90 yards in the neck. He was hit hard but ran a few hundred yards before I lost sight. I never found him, it happens sometimes w a tiny bullet
I normally keep it in the 50-60 yard range and ear hole...theyve take another step

AR 15, Barnes 62gr TSX bullets and a Pulsar thermal on top. Lighter to carry, kills them dead and when they go nocturnal you can keep chasing them 24/7/365.

You simply can't go wrong with a good quality semi-auto in .308 Win.. But for the past year I've done all of my hog/deer hunting with our 300 HAM'R with great success, over 500 hogs down and 165 YTD since Jan 1. I used a 6.8 SPC II for years and killed hundreds of hogs with it, bit I'm convinced that a .30 cal has better terminal performance and allows for more margin of error in shot placement. I use the Speer 130gr HotCore and it's DEADLY on hogs and deer.

Hello HS2, I am interested in this question as well as I want to start hog hunting in Texas but I only own a 1. AR-15 223/556 (but this rifle is not good for hunting hogs due to their smaller caliber and hog thick shield, unless you supper accuracy and I want 1-2 shots kils). I will just use this for home defense and fun shooting. 2. Savage 308 XP Hunter Rifle Bolt Action. I am thinking the follow up shot will be too slow for me as I am not an experienced bolt action shooter yet. I would like a semi auto rifle as well. I am thinking about an AR-10. Good thread.

I run a AR10 with a MK3 60. Really don't notice much of a difference between that and my 6.8. Really boils down to where you hunt. I hunt open ag land and often take shots over 200 yards. Sometimes hunt cattle ranch that's a little tighter shots and use the 6.8. An extra pound ain't a big deal.
