For your offseason entertainment, I offer a video of a goose hunt in Sweden. Man, those guys are structured. Like they went through a boot camp before being able to hunt. Not for this Amerikun. I guess they spoke English, but I couldn't understand it.(Okay, my computer speaker is bad). Something about nuisance control. Weirdest thing was the use of a red dot on all guns. I googled it and I guess some guys use it, but seems odd. Also not for me.

Interesting with the red dot since you don't "aim" with a shotgun. Those guys are good hunters though. That shot kam makes for great video too, I really think I'm going to get one for this next season.

I thought the same thing. If you have to look thru that scope, forget that. Normal shotgunning, whats important is that both eyes are always focus on bird, and you see barrel in peripheral vision. If you take your eyes off bird to look at red dot or barrel, you are toast. Its like trying to catch a football and you take your eyes off the ball to see a defender coming, no time to get your eyes back focused on the bird.

Agree, see target bird, shoot target bird, do not really think about it when wing shooting

That was what I found interesting about it -- this idea that you aim a shotgun. Totally different than the way most or all of us do it. I certainly won't be trying it. Yet it is interesting that they seemed to hit a lot of birds. Then again, I am guessing these are completely unpressured geese, and they seem to be hovering over the decoys at close range. Pretty sure a red dot would not work on a diver buzzing your dekes at full speed.

I have a red dot scope on my combo gun. It is 12GA over 6.5x55. It is there for the rifle barrel, not the shotgun barrel and sighted in at 50 yards. Even for rifle shooting with both eyes open focusing on the target I don't really see the scope, but can still see the red dot. Form has to be correct and the gun can't be canted or the dot disappears. It gives a picture sensation more as if your looking at a laser dot on the target. I have had situations like hog hunting with my dog close quarters where I want my dog in my peripheral vision, but need to use the red dot for precise rifle shot placement. With open sights I would be unable to focus on the target and my sights at the same time because of vision problems. One of them is going to be a blur. When I am using the shotgun barrel on the combo gun the scope is not turned on and I don't notice it being there. I could see how it would work well for the specific situation in that video. If those resident geese are close range feet down into the decoys all one has to do is put the dot on the gooses head and pull the trigger. Same concept as Turkey hunters with scopes on their shotguns. But I agree, it is really not necessary for shotgun hunting.

I have a Burris Speed Bead on a Maxus. After you get use to the bead you notice nothing but that red dot hanging in the air. I don't use it on sunny days but on those cloudy overcast duck days or first 30 minutes of legal it makes a world of difference. I use it about a third of the time and just helps these old eyes on those dark days.

It actually might help if your other eye is more dominant, if that red dot works like I think it does. I shoot right handed, when my eyes are focused on the bird in my peripheral vission, I see 2 barrels, like a double barrel shotgun. The left barrel is from my right eye, the right barrel is from left eye. So I use the left barrel, but as my left eye gets more dominant, the left barrel is harder and harder to see, that red dot might help.

First time I experienced the "sight" benefit on a shotgun was the "glow worm" on Ithaca Model 37, what I find is that the "sight" focuses your "view"...watching through the sight keeps me from lifting my head to "see" the hit...not sure that is actually what happens, but in watching videos of myself at the clay range I notice the "lifting when I am shooting a plain barrel or simple bead. Not so much with brighter beads or a red dot/camera on the receiver.
