You have a dog that contracted it? Was it up to date on the nasal vaccine?

Yes, he was up to date. Probably 6 months out. Kennel cough is a broad name for a number of different causes both viral and bacterial and the vaccine is not always 100% effective. I was told it should still shorten the duration though. It's my Vizsla Dash. It's been like living with a seal that never shuts up 24 hours a day. I don't think I slept two hours last two nights. The first night was really rough. I layed next to him all night. We are over the hump though. Not coughing as much today, his nose and eyes not running anymore, and he is his bouncy annoying self again. I started giving him Robitussin for the cough and benadryl to help him settle down and sleep. I think he is going to get through it fine without needing an antibiotic. My other Vizsla Blaze is over 14 and started to cough a little last night same as Dash started four days ago. I don't see how she is not going to get it too. Because of her age, I'm starting her on doxy in advance just in case. Hoping her run with it is more mild and less dramatic. I have been telling anyone that visits to stay away from them so they don't transfer to any other dogs.

Diarrhea is worse. Muffin is sleeping on the patio tonight.

Give them the nasal vaccine as soon as they start coughing and they'll be over it in a few days (that was told to me by one of the people on the team that created the vaccine). It's like taking Tamiflu within 24 hours of getting the flu. I've never had good luck treating it with Doxy.

Thanks for the advice kbobbjr. He is not coughing much at all today and pretty much back to normal. He only woke me up a couple times last night. Doxy is the antibiotic that is called for using on the bacterial side/Bordetella bronchiseptica if needed. I keep it on hand in case she gets an Ehrlichia relapse anyway and have to trash it when it expires, so I might as well get some use out of it. I also am giving her a probiotic. She is so old, I need to do anything I can to be proactive and boost her immune system. With her other chronic old age issues, if she got the same degree of Kennel Cough Dash had and progressed to pneumonia, it would surely kill her. She looked like she did not feel well for a couple days and had some mild coughing one night. So far she seems fine today so maybe she did/will not get it or only had a mild case of it.

Most people just let it run its course. If you travel out of state you should cycle your dogs on a 30 day regimen of doxi for tick born diseases

Had a brittany when I was a kid with kennel cough. Not sure what vet gave him but I remember I thought he was going to cough up a lung. I remember staying up at night just listening to him.

Yep it sucks. A clinic I used to work at had it blow through the boarding kennels. We treated a whole bunch of dogs for free.
