I tumble my brass in walnut, with the primer removed, causing me to have to pick walnut out of the primer pockets. I do this in an attempt to get the primer pocket cleaned up some. It doesn’t end up all that clean, but I haven’t tried it with the primer still in to compare. I will, but I’m curious what y’all have figured out on this.

I tumble it with the primer in. Makes sure there’s no plugged primer hole.

I leave them in unless using stainless pins and water which clean the pockets like new.

I suspected that would be the easier route. I’ll give it a shot.

^^This. But that is reserved for range pick-up brass. Usually .223/5.56 and .308 I Easter egg hunt for every couple of weeks.

And after tumbling primer in, and sizing, I'll run the brass under a primer pocket brush in the drill press.

This is what do. Fist step when prepping brass is to just run the primer flash de-burring tool into the brass whether it need de-burring or not just to clean out the flash hole of media.

I did several tonight. Some in, some out. I couldn’t tell a difference. Might as well not have to dig media out of the flash hole, so I’m leaving the primer in, from now on.

One of these days I’ll break down and get one of those.

I remove them and just used my needle pick to pop a few pieces out of the primer hole.

It depends on what your goal is in tumbling. I tumble after the primer is removed -- this removes the lubrication left on the case after resizing. Removing the lube is the PRIMARY reason I tumble, since the color of the brass on the outside has no impact on the performance of the load inside. Shiny brass is just a side benefit of tumbling -- removing the lube is the important part. Since every case should be visually inspected after sizing/tumbling, I sit down in my easy chair with tool akin to an ice pick and poke out any pieces of corncob/walnut left in the flash holes as I look each case over.

But, I only load for about four dozen calibers and I counted it up and I've now been reloading for just four years more than a half-century, so maybe you should ask someone who has more experience.

I've always pulled mine to help clean the primer pocket during tumbling. Back when I used corn cob media, it got stuck all the time. The walnut stuff I use now doesn't get stuck because it's too fine. So best of both worlds IMHO.

I noticed it’s not near as bad with smaller flash holes, using the walnut I have.

I do it both ways but usually with the primer in. The RCBS case prep center with the correct size brush does a great job on the pockets.

I figured the cleaner the brass, the the less likely it will get stuck in the die. I'm new to reloading and I've already had 6 or so cases stuck in dies. I'm sure I might be doing something wrong.
But, seems like an extra step to clean and lube me (even as "effortlessly" as wiping with a clean cloth) in order to not get cases stuck in the fl die, just to do it again after depriming.

So those who do, has anyone seen an noticeably difference in consistency from an "extra clean" primer pocket?

Kr you must be doing something wrong. I have been loading for 40+ years and you have stuck more cases than I have.

What lube are you using and how/
