I got a 55 gallon feeder that i would like to hang high in a tree.

Sounds pretty easy but just to be sure anyone got a idea on the best way to do it?

Over a branch seems risky. maybe attach a pulley to a branch?

I see the ones that attach to the trunk but dont see any rated for 55 gallon feeders

Anyone got any good ideas or someone on here makes the tall pole hangers please let me know

my dad used a pulley attached to the tree limb using a short piece of chain with a bolt thru the pulley and thru a link of the chain on each side with large flat washers (be sure to leave some slack in the chain to allow the limb room for growth). He then attached a hand winch (with brake) to the base of the tree with a couple of heavy duty lag bolts. Run the cable from the winch up thru the pulley and down to the feeder. He only used the 120 lb grease barrel size but same could be done with a 55 gallon barrel but would need to be careful to insure the lag bolts were heavy duty enough AND the limb was strong enough to hold the weight of a full barrel.

I have a couple setups like that. What I did is use a pully on a cable and threw the pully over a limb. A high one I first used a weighted fishing line to pull the cable up and over. The part of cable over the limb I covered with a section of garden hose to not damage the limb. Then tied the end to another tree. The hanging cable is run through the pully. One has another pully at the barrel and set up like a block and tackle I hoist by hand. The other has a boat winch bolted on a short section of 2x6. The 2x6 is double cabled to the trunk. Again covered with hose so it does not damage the cambian layer and kill the tree. It can easily be taken down and moved this way.

Guys, Here is a suggestion. Don't use a boat winch!!!! A $25 come along works much better and safer. It may be a little slower but will handle the #400 lbs better.

I've worked on a shoestring myself and have certainly done similar, so I don't want to come off wrong. MAKE SURE you use a brake winch, first last and always. Keep in mind generally a 55 gallon barrel will hold 300+ pounds of corn. The unit that Single Shot pictures is much better and i Winch feeder is even gooder. Remember WIRE ROPE and WIRE ROPE PULLEY'S. Remember keep asking yourself "what could go wrong"

I disagree. I tried a cheap come along and it was an absolute PIA. I was very limited on height and difficult to lower with weight on it. And the cable binded up a couple times creating a very difficult situation where I nearly dropped the barrel on the ground trying to get it to release. A cheap come along would be impossible to use with the two I currently have hanging because of height and probably any height if using pullys. Most come alongs have a pully installed on them that cuts the load in half and thus cheap ones having the 10 ft cable gives you less than 5 ft of lift. One of my wire rope boat winches now used for a fish feeder is several years old and probably rated for a half ton or more, the other one currently in use for a deer feeder is only 3 or 4 years old. It was under $35 bucks and rated for one ton. With wire rope pulleys/snatch blocks your cutting your 400lb load in half as well. Any decent 1000lb to 2000lb wire rope boat winch should be able to handle that 200lb half load just fine and should be fine with a strait 400lb as long as the cable is rated accordingly for the load and wear over time. Wire rope boat winches are the exact same thing that come with commercial tripod feeders. No matter which kind you use, do not ever stand under it.

Just food for thought! Harbor freight as well as others sell some decent ATV winches that are by their own nature weather resistant and have load ratings that are more than adequate! One of these ready to go when you pull up in whatever you drive. Hook up the clips to your battery and your in business!
