If you take emotion out of the equation and compare the custom actions builders pattern after the 700 action to the custom actions patterned after the Tikka action, you could probably draw some conclusions. Old folks are stuck in their ways and won't accept newer, better things? I'm old sure enough. There are some advantages that come with age. None of them outweigh the advantages of youth so don't waste it. I've handled enough Tikka rifles to know they shoot and function well. I've also handled enough other stuff to be open minded enough to learn there are other viable options as well.

We are all familiar with the cases of some old rifles are better than new ones, of the same name. Rem 700 made in the 70's is a much better rifle than one made in 2019. Pre-64 Win 94, JM stamped Marlin, the list goes on. If in 20 years Tikkas are not so good anymore, people will move on to what is a better buy for their money.

FWIW I recently purchased a new Tikka to have a new project for this summer. The superb barrels they get from Sako and the selection of LH models were the main reason. What are you having the 700 chambered in? I have a LH 700 long action i that I have not decided what to do with.... I think folks misunderstood where my post was coming from but I did get a chuckle out of where it went.

Yall are way more educated on this stuff than I am . What years were Remington good? I have several just wondering when they turned bad. The only ones I avoid are the J-locks, just because it's not worth the cost to replace when there are plenty without it. I have found the best finished ones to be from the late-'60s, but never seen one that wouldn't clean up easily. The only Remingtons that I've witnessed more often than not having accuracy problems are the AAC Model Sevens. There will always be ones that slip through quality control or ones that you find are really poorly finished, but few 700s won't shoot right out of the box. I grew up a Winchester fan, but learned to like the 700 in the Marines and furthered my appreciation as I learned gunsmithing. I really liked Savages, too, until I started tinkering with them more and found things I didn't like, such as having to mill away half the rear pillar because of the trigger design and rear action screw placement. Nearly every Tikka I've seen or shot has performed very well, though most of those were 595s.

FRA,
Last week I got a PT&G firing pin assembly for $54. This action was a J-lock I got bought right. In the end, I think someone is in the same money for a J-lock and a new firing pin assembly, as they are a non-J-lock firing pin bolt.

I own a j-lock. Other than being unsightly etc. what is the hang up with them? Mine is an ADL synthetic and has always shot very well.

Unsightly is the largest complaint. Do some Google searching, I think the Brownell's article was the best I read. It shows the firing pin spring of a J-lock wobbling its' way from handle to end, as well as a photo of an aftermarket pin assembly. It also describes an increased lock time because of it. Most might not notice it, but some would.

Dal broke up with me, she said I didnt have the stamina she was needing. I asked her where she was going, who she left me for. She told me his Forum Name , I begged her WHY ???!!! She said: "He's a Tikka LOVER" and she walked out of my life forever. Buzz, I wouldn't so much as turn on my compressor for a gal like that. Your better off now.
