Used my AC couple times this spring and it quit cooling 2 days ago. Its an Amana / Goodman unit about 10 years old, few years ago it quit and a tech came out and changed the capacitor. The round one I think. So, instead of burning $150 dollars minimum on the same problem I figured I would change out both capacitors and see if that gets me working. If it doesn't, I have 2 spare capacitors for next time it quits and I call a tech to come out. If it does then I saved myself at least $100. Will test the old ones after they are at.

Handler in the closet comes on, and fan on outside unit comes on but it is not cooling.

Guessing the oval capacitor is the start capacitor and the round one is the run.

Main question I have is, the black wire on the round capacitor came off when I removed it from the unit, before the pic and I put it back where I thought it went. Is that the right terminal for it? Nothing is labeled on the old ones or the new ones I got from Locke this morning.

I discharged them once I cut the breaker. I am by no means an expert, but learned enough from my Dad plus youtube and internet these days I can generally make things work without burning the house down.

Did the compressor hum when trying to start? There is also a relay that must be powered up by the thermostat. That relay and it’s LV transformer is also in play.

I can't hear anything that tells me the compressor is trying to kick on. There is a humming coming from the outside unit, I thought it was just the fan motor running.

You can hear and feel the compressor try to start. If you can stay out there and touch the compressor while someone turns on the A/C. You should hear the click and feel the compressor hum or kick over and run if it’s fixed. If you do feel it humming, that’s likely the cap.

Good luck.

So, if there is no click but I can feel it humming like it is trying to run that is a bad capacitor?

Put the black wire on the other side on the round Run cap. Did you see which direction the condenser fan motor was running?

That is not a dual capacitor that would be for the fan and compressor. The condenser fan motors are generally between 4-10 MFD and then the compressor is the larger MFD. On a dual capacitor you will have Herm. which is for the compressor, Fan, and then C for common.

I really don't know what they are doing with that set up but see if it works. If the condenser fan comes on check the direction if you put a dollar bill on the fan guard and it sucks if down it's going the wrong way.

You are most likely hearing the contactor hum which is getting 24 volts to the coil and pulling in and therefore sending the high voltage through the contactor and to the compressor and fan motor.

Do you know if you have and safety switches i.e. High/low pressure switches on the unit? They would either be on the service ports or on the lines inside the condenser and have two wires going to them.

If it’s humming, the relay clicked. Let’s say the control system is working for now. Change the cap on the compressor.

Thanks for the help. There is a relay/terminal looking contraption with red and green lights under the panel. I'll look for safety switches also.

When you say move the black to the other side do you mean other side of the side its on or to the other side next to the red.

The round cap wire looks good to me. Can you ID where the wires from the caps go? I expected the compressor to have a start and a run cap. Or a multi section cap. The fan cap might be elsewhere.

I did something wrong. That black wire didn't run from the round capacitor last night to the oval one, must have put it on there by mistake.

Is the contactor pulling in? If it is pulling in and you have high voltage at the top and bottom of the contactor then there is something going on with the compressor. On the black comfort Alert on the top left is there a code flashing on the bottom, it will be the already light.

If the contactor is pulled in and the high voltage is on both sides the compressor should have power and be working. Turn the power off and then put the black wire from the round compressor to the oval compressor on the right with the yellow wire then turn the power back on and see if it runs.

Is the condenser fan running and the correct way? If so then it's time to call for service as a pressure switch has tripped not allowing the compressor to run.
