Old one for sure! Great pics - whereabouts? Was on a hunt in Camp Wood 2 years ago and landowners grandson got a nice aoudad that scored 34 and change according to the ranch manager. All I know is he was big and the grandson didn't realize how big he was until he brought only the head back! Ranch manager told him you just got a trophy and missed on a great mount.

This was just south of Camp Wood! You know earlier in the season I connected on a big aoudad but we could not find him. I hit him high in the shoulder with a 30.06 and we trailed him over a mile. This photo was taken exactly one month later. I hit him on his left shoulder but this one does not have any damage there that I can see. I got the feeders going again so we will see if he comes back. Im not sure though, he doesnt look well.

That is a pretty big aoudad. He looks more sick or wounded than very old to me. The oldest ones I have ever seen were south of Pipe Creek on a friends ranch. He had stocked a bunch of them years before(in the 80's) and they killed some very old ones that he said were probably 18+ yrs old. He felt they were part of the original herd he stocked. The older ones could hardly walk anymore but were in pretty decent body condition. Two were in the 37"+ and 38+" range with one that was 39+ on one side and just over 40+ on the other side. The biggest one had died of old age and that is why he started to shoot a few. Those older aoudads on that place were a darker color than the rest of the herd than this one. Hope he makes it so you get a chance at him to find out if he was the one you wounded or just very old.

His horns are sure impressive. He looks pretty bad off, though.
Just curious. How do you go about aging those critters? Is horn size pretty consistent with age? Rings? Wrinkles? ID?

Once down, you can count annual rings just like sheep - wetting the horns makes the rings easier to see. On the hoof, the mature ones stick out like a sore thumb - especially if you have the luxury of seeing them in a group. Horn size is just like any other animal - assuming age and nutrition is the same, the genetically superior rise to the top. I with the group that says this ram is sick/wounded. Any chance this is the one one you shot? Lack of visible wounds doesn't rule out him being sick from wound infection... to me, anyway.

This video shows a perfect example of the body size difference in a middle-aged ram versus a big mature ram. Go to the 3:48 mark. Both rams would look pretty nice by themselves, but when they get side-by-side, the difference is unbelievable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHQ1M9KcIIA

Well I posted this about a year ago and guess what we found? Both his horns were in a creek bed about 50 yards from the feeder in the picture. He really was near death in the photos and apparently did not make it far. I can’t believe I missed it before but look closely at his left shoulder in the second photo. It looks to me like a large abscess the size of a cantaloupe. The big aoudad I shot a month before was hit high in the same shoulder with a 30.06. We trailed him over a mile but never found him. I am convinced that this was him. I feel badly that it turned out this way, but grateful that we recovered his horns. They measured 28” and 31”. The 28” horn appeared to be a little groomed off at the tip. I have a spare aoudad cape so I will shoulder mount him and put him in our hunting cabin where he belongs. I will post more photos of the mount in a few months so everyone can see how he turns out. What a story!
