GSD gets my vote. Wicked smart, instinctively protective, gentle as a summer breeze.

I've had Labs, Border Collie, Blue Heeler, and a Border Collie Blue Heeler cross. And now a German Shepherd that is a year and 3 months.

I'm going to have to say the German Shepher is my favorite so far. Some workers at a steel yard came up to my truck window to talk to me yesterday, and he backed them up. But he completely submits to me, and is very good with my kids. And he makes sure people and animals know where his yard perimeter is.

However, for a smaller dog, I love Blue Heelers. They are the very definition of the "size of the fight in the dog". They punch outside their weight class, and are very loyal to their master. It's a breed that country folk know you do not get out of the truck, with a Blue Heeler in the yard.

I have two dogs now would have a hard time picking between them if I could only have one Blue Lacy and a Jagdterrier the Jagdterrie goes every where with me from riding in the truck, skid steer, tractor ,sxs he's like a right hand I even buy him a ticket to fly back and forth with me. The blue lacy probably one of the best dogs to have on the ranch he will work cattle, blood trail, bay wounded game and is fairly mouthy when a some out of the ordinary is going on around the house. The lacy is big enough he can handle getting stomped by the livestock and keep getting up. The Jagdterrier has more grit and is smarter then most 3 dogs put together but he's only about 20 Lbs he is a natural born hunter/killer

We have a rescue Border Collie/Lab cross and a rescue Australian Shepherd, either one is fine.

Exactly what I am finding out with the one I've only had since last January. He's got some size now, and spends all day, every day with me, when I am off duty. He acts like I hung the moon and stars, but he has already scared the crap out of grown men and grown cattle getting too close to "his fence". He sure can flip the switch from pure sweetheart to wolf, towards everyone and everything outside his family.
