We are looking for a new pup in the next year or so and want to make sure that we aren’t overlooking a breed. We have had bully breeds for over 20 years and want to go to a larger dog, I’m not going to get into the whole pit bulls are the devil discussion (some are).

We are pretty set on getting a Boerboel but also like the characteristics of the Black Russian Terrier. We like confident, biddable, intelligent but aloof with strangers, short haired dogs so the Russian is more than likely out. We are definitely not looking for a Malinois, they’re just a little high strung for us.

We have no problem with muzzling, kenneling or leashing them when visitors are over or for vet visits.

out here there are probably 50-60 pyrenees on ranches and at homes. seem pretty laid back but I would not want to cross one.

Aussie Shep / Blue heeler mix- not exactly short hair but great working dogs and very intelligent.

Only the house and it’s occupants.

Retrieves better than most labs and is a serious home alarm system.

They all do, meaning all puppies or all lab puppies? If you want to rule out labs, go for it, but let’s not be ridiculous here.

I tried to quote your previous quote but can’t do 4 quotes.

I’m not talking about puppies or being ridiculous, anything that has a mouth bites, including the lab.

Was it their fault? Absolutely not, it’s their owners fault for putting them in a position that it was uncomfortable with. It’s our responsibility to know the animal and take appropriate actions to protect them and our guests.

Ex: You bring known/unknown people over, out of the ordinary activities, lots of food and drink and it’s not their normal environment. You’ve asked more than the dog can handle/provide and they lash out to protect their normal environment. Their normal environment could be laying on their bed in their safe place and have a “stranger” to them walk by and try to pet or hug them. That is their space and they are going to do what they feel is necessary to protect it, whether it’s out of fear (more than likely), scared or rattled.

At the end of the day it’s not the dogs fault, it’s the owners fault for not recognizing the situation and taking steps to protect the dog. It’s our responsibility to not put them in that position.

We’ve been looking for a few years, idk

We haven’t had big dogs in 3-4 years all we have now is a vicious(and I’m serious) chihuahua, he’s mean. But loves us. He’d fight a bear or man at the drop of a hat. Be careful of them, he’s got 3-4 bites under his belt. The FedEx and UPS men won’t come to the door anymore, LOL

We had a German Shepherd and Red Heeler, both were great. We had them for about 12 years a piece

My wife claims to have narrowed it down to a Aussie next, blue meryl is what I’m told

I’ve always heard good things about them

Edit: was that example about a lab specifically? Is that why you think labs bite kids?

You’re 100% right. All puppies have the ability to “bite” kids. You said labs bite kids in a thread where you’re looking for a dog breed to buy. I was just wondering why you responded to a simple post about buying a lab puppy with “they bite kids.” It made it seem like labs have a history of mailing children, which is not my experience or understanding. You also asked about some pretty protective breeds, but then said you’re ok with muzzling and kenneling when visitors come over. Seemed odd to me.

Good luck in your search.
