I have 160 acres in Dickens county. There are quite a few turkeys on surrounding properties. I have harvested several over the years but they have been transient birds moving through my property during deer season. I have not been able to score in the spring in 7 years although I do try and I often have them gobbling within a 1/2 mile of my place and my calls have not drawn them on to my place. I have been successful calling multiple times in other areas but I have gotten closer to the gobbling birds. I do not have sufficient large trees for a roast area most of my trees are mesquite. Wondering if anyone has a suggestions. Maybe some early type food plot.??? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Corn. We have 1,100 acres and a good amount of turkey. But they only are on about 300 of the acres. We have some feeders that a turkey has never been seen at or on cam in 15 years. We have a large creek and that's where the roost and live. Taken two so far this season.

Chicken scratch draws moisture and stops up the feeder, same as cracked corn.

Every place that I have had success with turkeys have all had one thing in common. Large open, areas without tall grass where they like to do their strutting.

Once overgrazed pastures are excellent. Birds can find tons of bugs and maintain their security. If you have water and roost trees, even better.

You need trees for them to roost in along with food and water. They don't travel as far as deer do. I add a sack of milo to every 3 sacks of corn to the turkey feeders, pre mix it before dumping on the feeder.

I only have about 10 larger trees isolated in one spot on the 160 acres. Most of my property is mesquite with a 50 acres of hay grazer. I have 2 of 4 feeders running with corn and milo. I have a stock tank 2x2x6 with water. This year is really poor as I normally have birds gobbling around me in the distance but this year I'm hearing no gobbling at all. Birds must be way down. Thanks for your suggestions!!!

From what I have seen. Turkeys like a landing strip surrounded by a grove of larger trees to roost in, and water. They really like the huge trees on the river that have a landing area near.
It is cool to get into a ground blind up under some big trees in the morning. At first light when the turkeys fly in it is cool. They glide into the field like bombers landing. I have seen more than 30 of them at times, one after the other. Truly an awesome site to see.
I can't say they that I have ever seen them in just a few single trees, usually a larger wooded area next to a flat "runway"
Corn and milo in the area sure doesn't hurt.
