I must have the world’s worst green thumb as I continue to struggle getting one of the “easiest” crops to grow. I plant millet and get good initial growth. Most plants get to be about 6 inches high and then wilt and die. Probably 1% of the plants will actually seed. I’m generally planting along pond edges and a couple seasonal swamps. With receding water levels on the ponds around the heat of planting time I’ve wondered if it is getting too dry? Do any of y’all help your millet along with water? If so any practical ideas for doing so? Or any other thoughts on possible causes? I’ve tried various seeding densities and planting at different times of year all with similar success (or lack thereof). I’m planting in the navasota area so I know there are certainly drier areas in the state. Any help is appreciated.

What are soil conditions? Have you done soil analysis? Are you tilling or discing beforehand? As an aside, there’s other things you could try to plant

When are you planting? Japanese millet thrives in hot moist soil, matures in about 90 days. So plant July or Aug, and on mudflats is best. Throw on mud flat to germinate, if it stays a mudflat it will thrive, if it goes dry and stays dry, yeah it will not do well, you are better off with browntop millet, it is more drought tolerant. But with browntop, if it rains and floods, it will not do well, this is where Japanese does better.

Planting millet is real hit and mis, a lot more mis lol. I had a private lease for about 6 years and tried planting millet many years, only had one year where it worked out good. Other times mostly just dried out and died.

I plant at the end of July and again at the end of our teal trip. Have never run a disc through. Throw seed down and walk around on it. Most of our plants never get more than 12” but I blame that on the high amount of iron ore rock not allowing roots to grow down enough. If needed I will put a few inches of water in the pond mid October but usually getting enough rain at that point and just plug the drain pipe.

I plant as soon as the weather starts warming up, goes to head and reseeds itself, sometimes twice before season. You are lacking subsoil moisture to keep the plants alive. Till/disc late in the yr to break up the subterraneous crust.

Use one of these if you can't till/disc

I had really good luck last year using Guides Choice. It’s a Mossy Oak Biological blend with millet, buckwheat, and rice. Around ponds and in sloughs, I just broadcast seeded and then dragged it with a pallet since I didn’t have a cultipacker. Planted in late August or early September, her. We did get some nice rain the week after I planted which I’m sure helped. If it didn’t rain I planned to pump some water into the sloughs from a creek.

We've run soil analysis on the fields that get planted. We have not done this on the pond edge/mud flats. Generally we do some form of tilling or discing except on the muddy areas. Always get good initial growth just have trouble reaching the finish line.

I’d add lime to the water assuming you have lots of pine surrounding the area. And supplemental watering would probably be very beneficial

in that area, my guess would be that you are throwing seed on wet mud, it sprouts(all this is happening in july/august), then doesn't rain anymore and it dies. try what youre doing with a browntop/Japanese millet mix. both will sprout, if it stays dry browntop will make a seed generally, if it gets wet the Japanese will make. Japanese is easy to grow, but requires a lot of water and will grow in standing water. or keep doing what youre doing with Japanese and water it, but that doesn't sound very practical for what you are doing.

We have the same issue, Beautiful Stand then 2 weeks later it's gone. We are told it's army worms. This year we are going to spray Intreped at about a week after emergence. Then come back and spray again the second week. Only have about 6 acres total so cost won't be to bad.
They tell us Intreped will stay on the plant until it gets to far along for the worms.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

no personal experience with intrepid, I was decimated one year(had quite a lot of acreage planted). I've had to spray carabaryl every year since. As soon as you start seeing a few cow birds, start paying very close attention, doesn't take them long. have had to spray a couple times some seasons. have just had to chock it up as another cost. actual cost if I remember correctly is about 10-12 dollars per acre, not counting your time to do it.
