Just sitting here ignoring Fox News and POOF! A recipe I came up with long ago comes to mind. That double decker deep dish pizza I built in a big Griswald skillet when the boy was a toddler.

I’m not gonna build it now, but it is on the shopping list.

The recipe is as flexible as your imagination but it goes something like this -

2 pizza crusts in buiscut cans
Pizza sauce in a jar
Meats (your call). Sweet Italian sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, crumbled lean beef, bacon, anchovies...
Cheeses (your call). Provolone, mozzarella, Parmesan
Veggies (your call). Red and green bell peppers, onion, sliced tomatoes, mushrooms, black olives, artichokes...

Unroll one of the crusts and pick a skillet to fit. I’ll use a small skillet and trim the crust to fit. Lay the crust in the skillet and trim it to fit. The crust should cover the bottom and the sides of the skillet. Swab it with sauce and start building. Cover the sauce with a little cheese and add your meats, or your veggies. Again, your call. The bottom layer should almost half fill the skillet. Add your second crust and trim to fit. Cover with sauce and add your veggies or meats, whichever you have left. Add the rest of your cheeses on top and put it in the oven. I’d do it about 350°. It’ll take a while.

I like to add sliced black olives to my meats layer and arrange sliced maters on top.

When it’s brown and bubbly in the middle pull it and let it cool and firm up. Slice it like a pie and serve on a plate with a fork. It makes superior leftovers.

Enjoy and take pics for us. I’ll make one soon.

That's a campfire dutch oven recipe if I've ever heard one.

Yes on the DO! Great idea. Notice I did not make my own sauce. It’s not worth the trouble and this recipe is intended to be cheap, fast and easy. And it’s a bunch of food. Plus, you can moan and groan at how much work it is and everybody will believe you.

Mama just told me to make a big one so we can vacuum pack slices to freeze. Like I said, great leftovers.

No no no you’ve gotta make your own sauce using some canned San Marzanos! I’ve got a pretty sinple recipe posted somewhere in the recipe forum. Make a big batch & freeze the leftovers in quart ziplock bags.

I looked at those tomatoes. Very expensive. In one study, Red Gold tomatoes came out way ahead.

Maybe $3.50/28oz can for the inspected DOP variety - still cheaper than any decent canned sauce.

For me they bring a whole different level of flavor & acidity to the party. I can taste a difference when I skip them for another variety.

I remember the Pizza Hut used to have a double decker pizza, with it being Pizza Hut it was pretty crappy. But you might be on to something there.

All I have to add is I like most breads, biscuits, deserts etc. raw, but canned pizza dough raw is nasty. cooked is good to go though. Im gonna save this.

I’ll make the deep dish double crust cast iron pizza instead. For some reason I’m no longer craving lasagna.

Decided to give this double crust cast iron pizza a go yesterday as I'm an ex Chicago guy that loves a good deep dish pizza. Flavor was excellent, cooked it on the pellet grill ( a bit darker in color) but not burnt.
Used Syracuse hot Italian sausage, hamburger, pepperoni, onion, canned mushrooms, bell pepper, black and green olives for the filling and Pillsbury thin pizza crust (2) and Ragu sauce along with the Mozzarella cheese.
Struggled a bit getting the crust in the preheated cast iron skillet but overall a solid result.

Great job! You don’t need to preheat the skillet. If you must, then just put the crust in a cold skillet and pop in oven to lightly brown it.
