Does anyone know of any kind of seed that you can just throw and not have to till the ground to plant? What seed would you suggest to plant? If planted now, would the crop be ready by August/September?

Yes, I believe native sunflowers can bloom in compacted soil. Seen them like that often. But wont throwing seeds on the ground call for other birds to come by and scoop them up?

Plus its too late for native sunflowers. They need to be out all winter and go through freeze thaw in order for them to germinate.

Spin donuts in whatever you got to tear up the ground and throw out a bunch of milo seed. Then drive back over all of it.

Hybrid sunflowers will come up now, natives won't. But if you buy both and mix them you will get the hybrids up this year and next year just turn the dirt in January and the natives will come up. Once you get the natives established all you have to do every year is turn dirt before the last freeze.

They say if you plow your natives in Dec they will come up for you better December and January is the perfect time for natives. I have done it in Feb due to wet fields and have been fine, but the more freezes on the freshly turned seeds the better. .
