We’ve been to Red River, NM 11 years running..

We’ve also been too..

Hot Springs
Pagasa Springs
San Antone/Austin
OKC
Cruises
New Orleans

I think we’ve taken the kids to 2-3 places or trips a year since they could walk

But I really want to spend the money on my place this summer.

Kids are 12 and 9

Fences, gates, cattle, grass, etc

So I am thinking a 1 trip summer.

2-3 nights, is Apline/Marfa Worth it?

We’re driving, if not tell me

July

Hit me...

Go to fort Davis and balmorhea to the springs. You'll need a few more days than 2 or 3

As of today, there’s no chance ole dad spending more than 2-3 nights on a hotel/cabin this year

I broke the news to them probably a month ago

They are spoiled, I don’t care.

Not happening this year

We drove from San Antonio to Marfa last summer on a whim. Saw the Marfa lights, not a ton of things to do there except go to Big Bend.

Camping in either Big Bend National or State Parks. BB State Park is way under used imo. Nice scenery both places. I would suggest going before the temps soar in another month or two. Ft Davis is cool. Alpine, nice to drive through but otherwise...meh.

Chuy's in Van Horn is a must stop.
Spend one night at Tin Valley Retro Rentals, https://tinvalleyretrorentals.com/
Another night Marathon https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Hostel/La-Loma-Del-Chivo-129702380403402/

You still have Fort Davis and Balmorhea, Big Bend both National and State parks. The Fort Davis national monument is also a must see.

In short, to see just part of it would require a week of super fast travel, or a month and only of seeing part of it

Then there is also Indian Lodge at Fort Davis State Park, and go to McDonald Observatory.

Never been there but Steamboat Springs CO is a very awesome in the summer. And has a heck of a rodeo too run by Texans. I am ready to go back!!! 2 or 3 nights is not enough anywhere though...

I see the Davis Mountains in the distance, at work. One of these days we’re down, I’m going to check them out.

Marfa's getting lots of arty/farty folks. Prices are through the roof. See it before it's a mini-Austin.

We did a short trip like that and had a blast. Day one drove to Alpine from Allen, had plans for the Observatory, but it rained so we decided against going for their alternate show. Day two hit up Marfa for breakfast and to tour the town. Left there for Big Bend National Park, drove around and hung out most of the day, then did dinner at the Starlight Café in Terlingua, then back to Alpine for the Marfa Lights. Day 3 drove to Bamorhea State Park (be sure to check if it is back open or not) to swim then drove to Odessa to stay the night. Day 4 Drove back to Allen.

Either they raised enough money to fix the pool just now or they were able to fix it by now, I forget which it is.

McDonald Observatory in Davis Mountains. They do Star Parties. Cool stuff. I am an astronomy nerd.

I don't think Apline/Marfa is worth it.

I'd look at Beaver's Bend/Hochatown. Hell of a lot closer, decent mountains (base of the Ouachita Mtns), plenty of things to do especially for kids.

Go stay for a few nights at Cibolo Creek Ranch. Do day trips to Marfa, Alpine, Big Bend, etc. Pricey, but they treat you right!

You might want to check out the Sproul ranch. Nice accommodations, good food, pool, etc. They do jeep tours of the ranch. If you've ever done any real four wheeling it's not a big deal but it's pretty country. They have a website.
