West is best for sure... but *best* is a relative term. Last season was good only in certain spots out west - tough season all around for most. At our place they didn't show up till deer season and saw the best numbers in February while quail hunting.

I didnt hunt last year for the first time in decades. My hunting buddy and I missed it, so we are going this year. With all this rain, sun flowers and such should be great, especially the outfitters who actually plant and manage their fields for dove shooting.

I'm hoping to squeeze onto a famous outfitters fields this year flehan

I agree that most would be wise to " go west young man " for a better chance at any winged fowl but there has been a rapidly growing amount of white wings invading north east Texas.
As of 4 or 5 years ago, I had no white wings ever at my bird feeders. Now they have displaced the mourning, ring necked and inca doves almost completely. They are very dominate over other birds.
What started at 1 or 2 birds has grown to 60 - 70 just in my neighborhood. They only disappear a month or so in winter, then come back in mass with reinforcements.
I understand they are city birds as we use to go to the valley back in the day for w.w. only hunts and shooting grounds were always just out of the city limits. With that being said, that many birds are not making a living at city bird feeders and our goat weed don't mature till late Sept. Oct.
Guess I'm gonna have to chase a flock to see where they go. They probably don't go far and seem to always come and go in large flocks and are easy to pattern.

It would be a nice change to see a game bird move into this area when everything else that flies is moving out. confused2

I hear ya.
Although I'd love to have an easy bag limit, I really just want to have more shooting opportunities at the least.
Sitting down and waiting for hours just to see 1-2 doves fly in the distance really irritates me.

My dad would make a bet with anybody, at anytime that it would rain at some point during Labor day weekend. He would usually win.

That's a big 10-4. The past few years I have seen a drastic decline of birds in the areas I usually hunt in.
I know when we were under drought conditions the birds were thick. But it's been pretty wet the past few years and numbers are way down.

Catch-22. Drought and we are covered in dove... I go west for dove for food and use an outfitter for consistent birds. Dove just leave before season if it is wet and hot. They go to food. Really wish later Jan was open but for zero reason Dec to Jan is when no one hunts...

30 years ago you couldn't find a Whitewing in this county, now they dominate. When I lived in town I was feeding behind the house, I'd put out about 20 to 25 lbs of corn daily. I'm saying there might have been 150 -200 birds coming in every morning and wipe it out, no Mourning Dove just Whitewings and Eurasians. On the ranch it's mostly Mourning Dove with a few Whitewings and even fewer Eurasians. It seems the Whitewings and the Eurasian prefer urban to rural living. There's allot of food sources in the city, tons of feeders, water and one of their favorites "Pecans and acorns". No they don't eat them whole but watch an area close to the street where over hanging branches are and see them eating on what gets run over. When I mow the yard I'm always scattering busted pecans and the dove come in immediately and start chowing down, they've adapted to urban living very well.
Something else I've noticed is the population of Eurasians just keeps gaining, they have turned out to be the dominate bird when it comes to territory and will run a Whitewing off. At the office we installed those gold reflective windows and the Eurasians are constantly crashing into them thinking it's another bird.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.
