And for sure, if I were looking to invest in beef cattle wagyu is the way to go. I would bet that after the market trends for so long in that direction, people that prefer wagyu will begin to enjoy steak that must be properly chewed and it will change!

tailchaser93 that is what I am trying to determine! Will any buyers even care if I am selling 3-10 or 16 Waygu cattle?

The only time I’ve heard of somebody buying a big group is for some restaurants but they wanted 40 head at a time to put on a feedlot.

I ate that meat in the pic above and just no way was it worth $49 a lb. I just supplied some wine.... Maybe just me but $17.99 lb strips do just fine for a nice dinner. And the butter thing, just eat butter, way cheaper. I like to taste meat because it is meat! I thought the venison tenderloins I brought were way better.

Good luck with the cows.

We used one of the bulls on some heifers one year. I was not impressed with the confirmation of the calf crop, slightly better than Corriente bulls.
Adios,
Gary

I don't know a darn thing about cattle, but I did try a Waygu smoked beef rib. I honestly didn't care for it. Way too fatty. Certainly not worth the price. A regular smoked beef rib is much better in my opinion.

Its amazing from Pappas Bros. I maybe a bit biases as Pappas is by far my favorite steak joint.

Maybe when our 50th rolls around I can convince my tight self to splurge for it. smile

If I wanted to try a wagyu bull on that number of cows I would look into getting them AI'd. I'm sure it would probably be cheaper than buying a bull.

I think it is about all live stocks- exotics or whatever. Until you get you name recognized the money is not there. It took me at least 10 years for me to start doing good with Ibex. With cattle I have no idea. Where is the market and how large is it? Find those out.

I don't know anything about waygu. What is the price range on the bulls?
I think it would mostly be a marketing strategy, whether or not you get a return. If the calves are going to the sale barn then you're probably not going to get a return. If you can feed out the calves and direct market for slaughter then you'll probably make out good.

The way I think about it is the bull is half your herd when producing calves. 1st priority is to have a good breeder & good cows that can raise a healthy calf to sell. Next priorities are putting weight on the calves and striving for #1s, which is usually easier with cross breeding.

This is correct. To achieve the A5 grade the steer is going to finish out at around 2,000 lbs. No way you get there on grass. If you are going to have your bull on angus cows I don't think you will see any monetary gain. As suggested, go the AI route and see where it leads you.

Eh. Look into Longhorns, resurgent Herefords, boer goats, emus or ostriches.

Angus, Brangus, Black Baldies or nothing.

I have done some research on the wagyu / black cross. Otherwise know as American Kolby. Wagyu bulls are about 2x the price of a good black bull. Cows can be very expensive. So expensive that it’s almost impossible to turn a profit. Bulls are smaller and produce smaller calves however they won’t bring an increase per pound at standard sell. Their meat is a bit more marbled but not significant enough to make a huge profit difference. Mostly a marketing scheme. True kolby is so rare that 99% of the steak houses that market it are false. It’s actually full wagyu or a cross.

I spoke with some ranchers in NM that are contracted with wagyu crosses. They own the black cows and lease the wagyu bulls from Idaho for breeding. Notice how many high steak houses market their high cuts meats from a “small” private ranches in Idaho. They get a set contract price for every calf that gets weened. They don’t have the play the market. Ship the calves north to get fed out, butchered, and sold back to contracted steak houses. Levels beef prices for the breeders all the way to the table.

We raise true longhorns. Not so much for profit but mainly yard art. However we butcher some and their meat is better than what you can get in the grocery store. And we don’t have to vaccinate them unless of a rare injury. But we are planning to buy some black cows soon. We are going to breed a LH bull with a black cow for butchering. Interested to see how it tastes.

Here is another interesting thing I have found out about profit livestock. I’m hearing more and more cattle ranchers switching to goats. Higher births totals. Lower feed costs. Less water consumption. Higher profit margins. Export Market tends to be more stable. I hate goat meat!

I didn't notice until you pointed it out. It is Wagyu and Kobe. Not Waygu and Kolby.
