I've been using marshmallows in my Dukes traps for the last 2 years but it has seemed that they have wised up to them. What else is a good bait?

Corn, cracked corn, milo, protein pellets, fish food, sweet feed, sardines, fish flavored cat food, and a cotton ball with some drops fish/sardine oil or fish attractant have worked for me in the past.

Many years ago, I used sardines. A can cost 15-25 cents and I could bait 5-6 sets with one can. On a good night I could make $12-15 with a single can pretty good for a 15-16 yo high school kid in the early 60's.

Be careful with fish like tuna or sardines. Other rodents like skunks and opossums will get in your traps. A skunk smell on the hwy is nothing compared to a skunk up close and personal..

I used sardines and never caught a skunk. Every time I used marshmallows, I caught a skunk. Never failed.

Corn, 95% of the time corn, occasionally protein pellets, once or twice a year when they seems to slow down on corn, marshmallows.

During the spring & summer I've found ants swarm bait other than corn, I caught no raccoons but did catch 4 skunks using cat food & sardines.

Most folks learn their lesson after catching one skunk, I baited 8 traps one Wednesday afternoon by Friday morning & the 4th skunk, never again.

Dry cat food and I use catfish bait, the squeeze tube that smells like fish to attract them. If you are concerned about skunks just situate your traps up on a branch if possible and secure it with wire or small chain.

I have a live trap at the house. In the past month I have caught 7 coons and one possum on corn. And no I do not move them except to the buzzard diner.

If you are just after coons.....cattle cubes (cow treats as my kids used to call them). Coons, skunks, possums all seem to like similar foods....you are going to get some bycatch.

They tear open my porch screens for dry cat food. And that’s the bait tonight and the rest of the week. Payback...

corn soaked in water until its soured had always worked good for me. I stay away from anything with fish as others have commented it will catch skunks and I personally do not ever want to target a skunk in a trap.

Canned cat food. Put it in the trap, in the afternoon, there will be a coon in it the next morning. Works every time.

If you accidentally catch a possum, let it go. smile
