I finally sourced some brass for my 35 Remington. It’s a Marlin 336 with a 20” barrel.

I’m looking at Speer Hot Cor in either 180 or 220g.

This will be a general purpose rifle used out to 100 yards open sights. Nothing bigger than what grows in east Texas.

I honestly have shot whatever I could get my hands on up to this point. Now I need advice since I have options. I don’t think I need a fancy bullet for the 35 Remington. It will obviously need to be a flat nose because of the tubular magazine. I will not be doing extensive loading for accuracy but will try several loads to obtain the best 50 yard open sight load I can get.

What’s the optimum weight bullet for my goals in this rifle?

Or:

35 Remington, what’s your favorite load?

A friend of mine had one,we used 110 grain hollow point made for pistols with a charge of Unique. We never chronoed for speed but it would hull out a jackrabbit at 100 to 125 yards.cheap bullets and small powder charge made for lots of fun

I shot 200 gr CoreLokt ammo for years. Then switched to handloads of 200 gr RN over IMR4064. As for sights, I went with iron sights for a while, but finally gave up and put a fixed 4 power on it. Just too hard to use the iron sights at dusk, and the scope fixed the problem

I use 200 gr. Hornada Lever-evolution. It gives you an effective 200 yd range.

For that caliber the 200 grain Core Lokt bullet is about perfect. It is somewhat inexpensive and readily available. I have use a 35 Remington for my personal hunting for many years. I have a Rem Model 8, a Marlin 336Twith straight stock, a Remington 14. I also have a Henry that is converted to 35-30 which has similar ballistics. I've used the 200 gr Core Lokt on most N.A. game and in S. Africa. I make an effort to keep my shots to 150 yards so I don't have to guess or hold over anything. Performance has been fantastic in every case. It is surprising how consistent this caliber is at what appears to be a Ho-Hum velocity.

I have a booklet called 1000 Tags Filled. It is full of data from a PH that recorded every shot clients took with different calibers, and records bullet, shot placement, distance to shot, distance to recovery and other noteworthy details. The 35 Remington is outstanding in the dozens of entries, and in particular with the 200gr Core Lokt bullet. If you are interested, I can email you a searchable copy, my compliments. Just PM and ask for it and provide your email.

Good luck!

My 1971 vintage Marlin 336 .35cal. would cloverleaf 200grain Remington Core-lokt factory loads at 50 yds. Never needed to use anything else.

WP you sold me some bullets that work well at 35 Remington Velocities and that is what I push them at from the 350 Remington Mag for reduced recoil hunting rounds. Too bad Nosler doesn't like their 357 180gr partitions as much as I do.

Yes I remember that. I tend to get rid of everything related when I change horses. I’ve since quit doing that. I’m now massing great piles of bullets that I no longer use. When I get rid of them now I give them away to a new reloader or someone wanting to try a different bullet.

I finally settled on the 220 hot-cor. Everyone in the world says the 200 core lok is king in that caliber but I’m just not a fan of Remington bullets.

That 180g partition for the .357 is a beast. Now you can only find them in stories of remember when.

Current goal is 21-2200 with the 220s with 75 yard accuracy requirements. Rifle will be wearing a FX-2 4x at least for load development. I like the FX-2s so much it may find a home there.

I'm a Speer #2235 180-grain fan whether it be my Marlin 336D or Remington 600.

Dang nice ranch dog. I was wanting to ask you about the 220g Speer Hot-Cor. After doing tons of research I can’t find the ideal powder. Looking to get around 2000 from a 20” barrel. Originally I wanted more but 2000 will do.

I don't see why it wouldn't work; I have not shot that bullet though. I went ahead and drew the bullet so I could image a load. I think H335 would give you what you want as long as you and your rifle are willing to run beyond the SAAMI max (33.5K PSI). Personally, I run my "D" up to 40.0K PSI. The 220-grain bullet will stick about .140" below the case neck.

That 37.7-grain load would deliver 2100 FPS. Of course, you would want to work up to it in small increments.

The one thing I would do is call or email Speer and find out what the design velocity range is for the bullet. If they had in mind for it to be a higher speed offering for the 358 Win, it probably is going to not be appropriate for lower velocities (1800 ~ 2100 FPS).

I recently bought some Hornady 200-grain Spire Points for my Rem 600. I would like to use a different bullet so that there is a difference in the appearance with the ammo. I run the bolt action at 55.0K PSI and I would hate to put that ammo through my pretty "D".

The "D" is a mini-Guide Gun and a couple of years ago, I applied the XS system to that rifle.

That bullet in particular Speer designed for the 35 Remington with a flat point. With that said when it falls below 1900 the expansion goes to near nothing. It does perform well up to 35 Wheelen velocities.

Thanks for the 335 info. I will start low and start checking group sizes once I hit 2000fps.

My Marlin is a 336CS with a 20” barrel. I really like the D you have there. The CS probably has less than 200 rounds down the tube accounting for probably 3 deer and few pigs to boot.

The "D" sees more of my TLC359-190-RF cast bullet than the Speer, but I keep a loaded inventory of Speers for it. Here is my cast bullet.

I also have a Savage 170 chambered in 35 Rem. It is a neat rifle, not many around.

I only use 200gr bullets, the brand doesn’t seem to matter with a full charge of 4320. They all hit the same place on paper at 100yds. 200gr Leverevolution factory ammo hits the same place too. I have a two pound coffee can full of Speer 200gr TMJ 357 pistol bullets I got cheap so that’s mostly what I load. 4320 powder hits higher on paper at 100 yds than any powder I’ve tried.

I saw that when I was looking at the 38-55 wytex ordered.

I did get some 335 now to find time to load.
