I won a E-Card hog hunt for the first weekend in May. Never been to this area so looking for any advice. I am told that the ranger will assign the hunt area so I am just trying to determine if a ground blind or tripod is the better option. The hunt allows for baiting so plan to do plenty of that since it is a 3 day hunt.
TIA
Charlie

I have hunted Gus Engling during the Muzzleloader hunt in April long ago. In May you will be enjoying one of the largest populations of Water Moccasins in the world! Bring snake boots. A truly annoying thing was that there were hog traps set out. I saw one hog running through the thick brush but had no shot. All the bait we put out was devoured before daylight. However there were a few hogs killed so good luck!

My place is about 1000 acres and we practically border Gus Engling and catfish Creek. Tons of pigs around. Get there early and put out your pop up or tripod along with corn. As for which is better it depends on the terrain you’re hunting. I’d opt for a ground blind if close range. Tripod if you have some open area. Feel free to PM me

We got drawn on the last weekend of the hunt last year. Very few people showed up so they let us hunt the whole place without assigning areas you had to stay. We set out 3 areas of bait and put up a pop up and 2 climbing tree stands. The hogs were very nocturnal. Bait would be gone by morning every day but never saw any hogs in the blinds hunting the baited areas the whole hunt. We hunted all day everyday and never saw others or heard any shooting. I did happen to get 2 hogs on the hunt but they were both in the middle of the day walking very slowly and quietly threw very think brush and bumping bedded hogs. Saw a lot of hogs this way but very hard to get a shot in the thick brush and very hard hunting especially if it is hot. The other members I was drawn with did not want to put that much effort into it and they did not get anything or see anything hunting the bait.
If the trigger is gold, the birds will fold.

Thanks for the heads up on the snakes. Didn't even think about them being an issue.

Will probably go ahead and take the tripod stands as well as the ground blind. Hopefully there will be more movement during the day. Otherwise as you suggest will be doing some walking. We are camping there so will probably hunt all day each day. Wife wants to come home with some pork chops.

TJack had his annual youth group event out there a couple weeks ago. The kids learn about conservation and wildlife. I did not attend but heard a lot about it. They do have wildlife biologists trapping out there, and they took a sounder of about 20 when the boys were there.

I was not able to go but the wife went. She did not see a single hog. The area had lots of standing water and not able to cover much area. She did hear some shooting but I think there were very few hogs taken.
