Just starting to look around at a different pair of non-insulated hunting boots. I already have a set of insulated Danner Pronghorns that fit great, but they are a little toasty in Texas. I also bought a pair of non-insulated Danner High Ground boots a little over a year ago, but they are slightly too narrow. They work fine for minimal walking, but longer days on foot tend to start cramping my foot.

Any good recommendations for non-insulated boots for all day hiking and are fairly waterproof, and light for UNDER $200. I was just browsing Midway and some of the Irish Setter Ravine and their Ravine BOA look comfortable, but zero experience with that brand. Any other recs?

Will be used mainly in Texas but also a warmer weather boot for Colorado elk.

Online most everything is over $200. If you were to go to Cavenders or a similar store... I’m pretty sure you could
Be out the door under $200

That's a sharp looking snake boot, and may look at those for a different purpose, but I'm mainly looking for a lace up style hunting boot.

Something similar to these. https://www.amazon.com/Irish-Setter...52340427&s=apparel&sr=1-76-spell

I've always hunted in regular cowboy boots, but I cant walk all day in them. I've read a lot of the posts on insulated boots, but not much on warmer weather boots. By warmer weather I mean early season or 70 degree November/December hunts, not summer snake weather. ha

What kind of hunting? In most cases hunting brands don’t really make the best hiking or hunting boots and their only “advantage” over real hiking boots is camo.

The below will all make better hiking and packing boots. They will make from lightweight day hikers to full mountaineering boots. Also if your used to Danner they will be an awesome change in the way your feet feel hiking.

Lowa
Salomon
La Sportiva

I’ll check those out. I haven’t really looked at any of those brands thinking they were high dollar. I really don’t care if they are camo or not, just mainly comfortable, fairly light and cool, and keep my feet dry. I love the way my danner pronghorns fit, but they are pretty warm over about 60 degrees or so, since I’m pretty hot natured. The weight isn’t terrible, but they just feel pretty clunky if that makes sense. I used them in Colorado in the THF elk hunt in 2015 and did fine, but they were just a little warm on a few of the warmer days.

Since I liked the Pronghorns so much, I picked up the same size in the High Ground non-insulated. For short times on my feet, they are fine, but for long morning hikes they are too narrow and start squeezing my feet causing cramps in my soles.

Mainly looking for a boot for elk hunting that I can wear on the warmer days, then use them for the majority of whitetail here in Texas.

Half the time I’m hunting here in Texas I wear my Ariat work boots, but that’s not long extended walking. Stupid comfortable but walked a little over 6 miles in them a couple of weekends ago out in Mason hunting hogs...never again. cry

I’m a fan of the Hanwag Yukon’s. Re-soleable, leather lined, non goretex so they breath extemely really well. I’m on my third resole. I wear the heck out of them. Kept them oiled and they are pretty much waterproof

Bobo, Do they break in pretty well. They look about as easy to walk in as a set of snow skiing boots. I know looks can be deceiving though.

They break in pretty quick, mine took about 20 miles . They aren’t that stiff soled, think they are B/C rating. So in the middle more or less.

I use crispi cream or grangers for up keep and waterproofing

You’ll likely have to catch them on sale but, keep in mind REI, Backcountry and Mountain Gear websites will all be dishing out 20% off coupons here in the next few weeks so this will come in handy for your boot needs and getting you into the sub $200 range. I love my Zamberlans. It is 100% based on “YOUR FEET” and how brands fit you. Good brands to look at are: Zamberlans, La Sportiva, Lowa, Asolo, Salomon. There are definitely others but these are brands that I like.

Euro-optic just sent an email that all in stock Kenetreks are 20% off.

I ran the 1006 for a while, it a good last if you have wide feet. I agree not a one size fit all I can’t wear kenetrek or schnees/gronels. A lot of really good leather lined non gore/membrane options out there

I have run the 960 GTX for 5 years now. ZK, two other brands that have great price points and seem to have some well made boots are the Schneels that Bobo mentioned as well as Crispi boots. I have no experience with either but there is a fairly good market for them in the hunting world.

Some great info guys. I really appreciate it.

I didn't even think about REI or any of the big camping/backpacking stores.

Another question...What's the big deal with the new "tactical" style hunting boots? For example, while I was at SHOT show, Cameron Hanes was in the UA booth with his new boot that came out. I've been seeing a lot more of that style boot recently. Are they just slimming boots down for weight, or what's the big deal with them? (not necessarily his boot, but that style)

The big clunky hunting boots of old serve no good purpose. Even the heavy leather boots are outdated. They may last a little bit longer but they’re just too heavy for what they provide compared to others. I think hunting companies are just finally catching on to what the hiking and mountaineering companies already knew was best. My mountain and heavy packing boots are a pair of La Sportiva synthetic mountaineering boots that come in under 2lb for the pair. Kennetreks come in closer to 4lbs. My lightweight hikers come in ultralight while still having goretex lining.

Remember goretex will keep you dry from what’s outside but also not let sweat escape like a non lined boot

As an overall hiking and packing boot, without needing one really stiff for extreme country, you be hard pressed to find a better boot than the Salomon quest 4d gtx. Look them up and read reviews. Probably one of the best reviewed boots you will find.

The red is what I was trying to say but just couldn't seem to put it into words lol

Those Salomon quests are a sharp looking boot. That style of boot would probably serve me better. That's also what I was thinking is more of a tactical style boot. To me they look much less clunky and seem like they would fit my hunting much better. Our Colorado area had a pretty soft ground for the most part. Some rocks, but not much at all.

I find salomon come up a bit narrow on me and I also don't really like hiking boots for hunting due to the bulkiness. I am currently looking for some tan desert jungle boots in military surplus to wear. Light, breathable but durable and not bulky.

Good boot, virtually no break in required. Only down side is longevity. They won’t stay Waterproof with extensive use compared to an all leather/gtx bootie boot.

Watch cabelas, they tend to stock up on them, so they run a bunch of specials

Good point Bobo. I figured they wouldn't be as durable as the leather boot, but I try to not be too hard on my gear.

I'll probably just head to cabelas and check out a handful of different style of boots. I just haven't really been around the other styles (similar to those salomon quests.) A lot of good info yall guys have posted. Hopefully it can help others out as well.

Txshnter basically bought a pair and went to CO with me the next day. He had happy feet. He is on his third season with them, I don’t know if he wears them out side of CO backcountry hunts though.

Unfortunately, EuroOptic was told by Kenetrek to tap the brakes on that sale. None of their boots are actually on sale even though the EO website says 20% off.

I was down in Houston for work this past week and had some time to kill, so I stopped by REI to try on everything they had. I tried a few sizes of the Salomon quest 4d gtx. Nice boot and fit great, but the more reviews I've read on them, the farther I'm staying away from them. Apparently they are on the "version 3" currently, which is not holding up near as well as version 2. The soles are coming unglued and the rest of the boot seems to deteriorate fairly quickly. Unfortunately there were more bad reviews than good ones, because I liked the way they fit.

I still have a couple of places to go try on boots, but at least at REI I've narrowed it down to 2 there. Oboz Sawtooth 2 and the Keen Targhee 3. I'm scared the Keens may be a little bit of a too soft footed boot, but I bet those would be great for every day wear. The Sawtooths may be the ones I end up with, depending what else I find at Bass Pro or Cabelas.

Will do Bobo. I'll see if I can find a store with them. I have some Columbia sneakers that I really like a lot. Haven't tried any of their hikers yet though. They didn't have any at the REI I went to, but there's another store down in austin I may go check out.
