Well shot my new handloads yesterday and to say I am impressed is an understatement. First shot put 355 in 10 with 184 in 20. Second shot was 354 in 10 and 183 in 20. The 3rd shot was 318 in 10 and 205 in 20. Honestly, this combo is a little to tight for my liking, but with me leaving next friday heading to yall's great state, I am gone just have to roll with it. If the bird gets within 40 yards I am gone bust some waddles instead of the head. If he gets real close he may get shot in the body. This TSS is some incredible stuff. This combo above is a no kidding 70+ yard gun all day. Even though I would never shoot one that far...I would let bird ease off and set back up on him if he wouldn't come closer...the fact it is capable is utterly impressive. I have made the mistake hunting field birds of shooting at them farther than I thought they were. It is nice knowing if that mistake is made again I got a gun capable of killing.

I tried a .640 with TSS9's and found it too tight. Went back to a .670. Still a great pattern at 40 yards, but with a little more wiggle room under 25 yards.

You loading for 12 gauge? I thought about loading for mine but the 20 is more deadly than the 12 with havi shot so I just stuck with loading it and using less shot.

What gun and choke? This will be my 9th or 10th season shooting TSS. I've built 15+ 20s for family or friends after they've seen the results from my gun. Such a dream to carry a 21" barrel 20ga that weighs under 6 pounds without ammo or optics compared to those fixed full 32" 12s I cut my teeth hunting with. My personal gun is 400+ in the 10" circle @ 40yards with a .572 Remington Super Full "lead only" choke. All the others I have built generally average around 350. I needed a more forgiving pattern for my dad's gun since he hardly has a shot over 40 yards hunting Easterns in MS. So, I went with the Remington Super Full Hevi-shot choke. I don't remember the constriction, but it was the most even pattern I've seen out of a gun I've built yet. 250 in the 10" and 250" in the 20' circles. There wasn't a hole in the pattern you could fit an egg without it getting hit. I've misjudged birds in big wheat fields in Western Texas and Oklahoma and broken leg and wing bones with the #9 shot at distances over 40 yards. I shot a bird running in OK with my 12ga before I convienced myself to go to the 20ga after a buddy of mine shot and killed a bird at 50+ steps. The shot entered the birds right breast, went thru the breast bone, and exited the left breast at that distance. Bird was on a dead run and cut him a complete flip. That was eye opening to me. I started this TSS journey with #7s in a 12ga. Now I'm down to #9.5s in a 28ga. Moving to the .410 after I kill my slam with the 28ga. Welcome to the addiction! rofl

Like you said, if I've got my 20ga in hand I won't let a bird get in closer than 40 yards if I've got my tight choke in. If they do come in from an angle, I can't get a shot until they are close, I aim for the base of the neck. If you don't have a red dot on your gun, I'd highly suggest you get one. They are easy to miss when your pattern is this tight and you get caught up in the moment not welding your check to the stock. I've done it more than once, but no misses after the red dots. up I also have no fear in shooting them in full strut any more either.

I have a FF3 on my gun. Only shooting 1 5/8oz of shot in affinity 3. Load is called lil Hammer. If I had a pump I would load BIG20xxxl which has 1 7/8 oz of shot or eithe the MOA load with 2 1/8oz of shot. But for one the auto wont pull one from magazine and for two the gun can't withstand the amount of force applied form such a load. I use a sumtoy 562-5. Next year I am going to a carlsons 575. No need to have more than 300 in the 10 at 40. Thats still a 60+ yd gun if need be.

Great combo. FYI, no need for 1 5/8oz of 9's or more payload. I've dialed mine back to 1 1/4oz loads. Still 200+ in 10" @ 40 yards.

I thought about going with 9.5s, but the 9s are the way to go imo. Plus once I open this choke up some I should be around 300 in 10 and 250-275 in 20. Not a 50/50 pattern But darn close. I am going to not only finish my slam next year but do single season slam. My family sold our land in Georgia so the eastern is going to be the biggest challenge next year. Going to A relatively cheap hunt in south Florida (1800 for 2x Osecollas), Wyoming for 3 days for a merriam (500 including meals and lodging to hunt on 36k acres), Texas for my rio where I plan on going every year, and the Eastern is up in the air. When I am in Wyoming I may try to find a place to jump over and hunt Nebraska and/or SD as well. I thought about catching Kansas on the way home to kill an eastern, but dont have any connetions there.

Tons of good walk in turkey hunting areas in KS. They print a brochure every year, or you can find it on the web. Kansas Parks and Wildlife.
