I had three from my grandmothers place in Sweetwater....all were red. I had them for several years and they stayed red....wasn't dirt stain....they were colored similar to the one in the first picture,

I also had one from my uncles place in Salado...lots of limestone....snake was really white/light colored......

Neat animals....

Nice pics! Good looking snakes....

Those are 2 beautiful color phases of western diamondbacks. There is a species (crotalus ruber) in California that's common name is the red rattlesnake or the Baja Red. cheers

Also, anyone interested in the color and pattern variation in snakes should look up the gray-banded kingsnake (lampropeltis alterna) from right here in Texas. They have 7 distinct color phases and countless minor variations. They're #1 on the bucket list for almost every snake enthusiast in Texas, or anywhere in America for that matter.

Never seen the BAJA Red but have caught and handled Mojave Greens when I was in Victorville California.

Jess, you just picked my 2 most wanted snakes. I've caught every pitviper in Texas except the rock rattlers. I don't think a creature can get any prettier than those 2.

Those California Mojave rattlers are super green. Ours are not nearly as green but they start showing those genetics as you go west. Arizona is where that trait really starts to stand out.

Beautiful coloration.

Both in that classic position for sunning themselves undisturbed.
