I'm old and fat and got suckered into running a bi-athlon next month. My right knee keeps swelling up the size of a softball. I've been living on naproxen, ice, and heat. As the distance increases it's getting slower to recover. And, it hurts more and more at night. Any suggestions other than rice. (Rest, ice, compression, elevation) I really cant back off too much over the next 6 weeks or I won't be ready.

Sounds like now is not a good time for you to do this, your knee is not ready.
No shame in backing out if it is going to damage your body.

Being old and fat is a tough job. Don't ask how I know.

You could look in to cryotherapy. The benefit claims are endless, but the summary is you stand in a tube with your head out and it blows liquid nitrogen -220 - -270 at you in pulses for 3 minutes. Sort of like an ice bath on steroids. A session costs around $25 but multi-session groupons are around for quite a bit cheaper.

I've tried it a few times and have felt better immediately after and it seems to help with muscle soreness. Not sure if I'm a true believer but it could help with your swelling. The other treatment you could look at is Normatec. It's basically a set of zip of pants that fill with air and offer moderate-intense compression for about 30 minutes. There are a lot of long distance runners and weightlifers who swear by it.

There is a place called IVBars out by me that offers all of this, but not sure what's out your direction.

I don't know how old you are but at some point you just have to admit to yourself that you cant run anymore...….unless of course you want to pay the price with your knees.

For me it was at age 39 that I just had to quit running. I have always sucked at running but still liked doing it. I am in pretty darn good shape for my age but after every run my knees would be sore in the morning. I quit running and I quit being sore in the morning. Age catches up with everyone regardless of how young you feel or how good of shape you are in.

What do they call old runners with bad knees? Bicyclists.

My grandson has just had a couple of cryotherapy treatments on a sprained foot. He said it really helped a lot.

I’d go see a knee doctor. He’ll charge you money to tell you what I’ll tell you for free - quit running. The knee swells as a protective mechanism. It’s telling you something.

A couple of years ago I was having real trouble with my left knee. It would swell up and it was weak. Finally I decided to go see a specialist in College Station. He had a look and told me that the muscle groups “were firing out of order” and the solution was rehab. I went through all of that and my knee is much better. I can get around on a tennis court and I can climb a ladder using both legs, both of which I couldn’t do before. The doc did tell me that my running days were over.

Go see a specialist and quit running until he’s had a look at your knee. Maybe the problem can be fixed.

I'd be willing to bet $50 that your form sucks and you're a heel striker which is causing your problems.

Rub some dirt on it.

No man, go to the doctor and get it checked out, listen to them if they tell you to bail on the event.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm on the eve of my 56th bday. The closest I'll get to cryonics up here is dunking in the ice covered stock tank. Going to my doc tomorrow. Developed a limp and my calf muscles won't release.

I'm too far out of shape and probably getting too old. But, I'm going to do this run if I can. Keep the tips coming. Rubbed CBd oil on it today. Nada.

If it was my knee I'd put DMSO on it just to see if it helped. I'm not telling anyone else to do it.

But I will suggest going to Walmart.co and getting a little trampoline
. Running in place on it will be a lot easier on your knees. They'll even send it to you for free.

Love my doc. Told him "no" to xray and mri. My deductible is 6k this year. He said,"old school it will be. My xray vision and your history lead me to suspect your meniscus. We will numb, drain, and shoot with steroids to get you through. Of course, you could lay off and let it heal but I reserve that treatment protocol for my smarter patients."

Pride goeth before the fall.

And after the fall comes bruises, scrapes and possibly a concussion.

Agree with most here

Get an MRI, find out whats wrong

Find access to a pool, move up here where I live. Indoor pool, just walk with a big foam "noodle" its great for the body

hate to see you or any of us older fellas hurting, comes with the territory..

There's a lot of good advice here and in other posts. While I'm more prideful than I should be, that's not the motivating factor. My son in law and youngest son asked me to do this with them when we were together at Christmas. It's the first thing the SIL has ever asked of me. My 9 year old grand daughter was going to do it with us but the organizers won't allow anyone that young. (Thank God). So, she has become excited about being our crew, along with the other grands and our kids.

I believe it's important for these kids to see grandpa follow through on a commitment even though it is tough. Did I bite off more than I can chew? There's no doubt about that and I'd love to go back in time and do this one differently. But this is my moment in time to make a memory with my family and I'm not going to disappoint. That is, with a lot of help from the man upstairs...keep me in your prayers.

Sounds like the SIL got a life insurance policy on you. Don’t sign anything

We will be back in the woods. I'll grab hold of whoever is running by and make them drag me until we get in view of the kids and then I'll act as if I'm a spring chicken...

Sounds like you're just going to have to tough it out if you insist on ignoring your body.
I really hope it goes well for you.
