Mouth calls hard to pick a best but lots of custom makers out there make some great calls.
ECaller Foxpro is really all you need to know.

I really like my Fox Pro, Not the cheapest price but usually the good ones aren't. Would buy again without a doubt.

I've got a Fox Pro, which is great for ease of use and variety of calls. I do think some of the smarter critters can tell the difference between that and a hand call. I usually carry a hand call to try and coax them in if they get hung up out of range.

In a couple of months I will release a new electronic caller that will be the greatest innovation in predator calling in over 60 years. Since animal recordings were made on 78 records in the 1950's, there has been no improvement in sound quality. Callers are more rugged since we introduced the first digital caller in 1990 but no improvement in sound quality.
For over 20 years, I have been wanting to build a caller that would produce ultrasonic sounds and was not able to accomplish this goal until now. We have known that coyotes hear frequencies to 45,000 Hz and cats up to 64,000 Hz while the human ear only 23,000 Hz. There would be no need for ultrasonics if the predators and prey animals were not producing them but after recording the first baby cottontail and putting the recording on an oscilliscope, we found that it went to near 90,000 Hz. So far, every animal distress recording that we have tested went to ultrasonic levels. After testing the speakers on the electronic speakers on the market today, we find that they will produce frequencies in the 15,000 to 18,000 Hz range. This explains why predators, especially coyotes "wise up" so quickly to the electronic callers on the market today.
Adios,
Gary

Excellent idea Gary. If you don't mind, I will PM you my email address. Let me know when it's available on the market - I'd be interested in buying one.

For a better explanation of ultrasonics, I suggest that you read the article that I wrote in the March-April issue of THE JOURNAL OF THE TEXAS TROPHY HUNTERS.
This is not "black magic" and can easily be proven with scientific equipment. Did you ever wonder why the simple lip squeak is such a great sound to get a "hung up" bobcat or coyote to break from cover and respond close to the sound? The reason is very simple. The predator responded to the e-caller because it sounded similar to the cries that he is used to hearing. After a period of time, the predator realizes that the sounds are artifically "flat" and there is no frequency range. When you turn off the caller and begin squeaking, you are producing a sound that reaches 60,000 Hz and now we are much more realistic.
This means that we are hearing approximately 1/3 of the sound range that is actually produced!
Adios,
Gary

Howdy Gary (sorry for the thread hi-jack Tbar)
Have you tested frequencies of mouth calls with the "scientific equipment"?
Just curious if those can reach ultrasonic levels.

cullbuck, yes we have and as you would expect, there is a pretty wide range in frequencies. This explains why I constantly receive call from all across the country (especially pressured areas) from hunters who say, "I can call critters with my hand calls but I can't call anything with electronics". I am proud of you for bringing that up and shows that you understand the principles and are thinking ahead.
Adios,
Gary

Thanks Gary.
Re-aligning with Tbar's original post, what mouth calls perform the best (scientific equipment testing and more importantly in the field)?

Lucky Duck Revolution is one of the best. Rick Paillett has some of the best sounds going.

X2 on the Lucky Duck Revolution. Ask me how I know. Been out twice in last 2 weeks with a new on. 14 coyotes, 4 bob cats, and 3 fox. Probably called in twice that many. Stupid cows charged in to call last night just as 2 coyotes were pouncing on call. No shot.

Problem with all of the e-callers on the market today is that they produce frequencies in the 15,000 to 18,000 Hz range while the prey sounds are all over 50,000 Hz. That is why the caller works well the first time in an area and then success rate drops rapidly after that. The callers are not producing a realistic sound.
Again, this is why the lip squeak is so effective to coax a critter when it hangs up...you are hitting frequencies well over 50,000 Hz.
Hope this makes it easier to understand.
Adios,
Gary

The only way to test any call is with an oscilliscope which can be a pretty expensive piece of equipment. I cannot tell you which hand calls create what frequency level as we have found that there is a difference in every call because of reeds and a difference in who is blowing the call.
I think a lot of guys are under the impression if you have an ultrasonic speaker that it will produce ultrasonic sounds. Truth is unless the sound was recorded on an ultrasonic speaker it will never go ultrasonic. We are in the process of re-recording as many sounds as possible on ultrasonic equipment.
Adios,
Gary

I have a cottontail distress made by buck Gardner, very easy to blow into. It brings them yotes in.

I’ve always used FoxPro but recently got the Ioctec Outlaw. In my opinion it blows FoxPro out of the water. 300 yard range, ability to play 2 calls at once, and incredible sound.

Iotec is making nice e-callers very inexpensively. Why do you want to play two calls at once??????

Have a buddy who uses IcoTec and it seems to work. I have tested my Foxpro remote to 460 yards and it worked but have never actually put that to practical use.... and it also plays two sounds and I do use that feature occasionally. Having heard both I won't be switching.

I prefer mouth calls over e-callers. E-callers just don’t produce the right sound. The new Bullet HP is supposed to be the most realsistic on the market, but nobody I know has one so I can’t test it. For mouth calls, I use Red River Calls, simply because he is a friend and I’ve had good success with them.

in my experience coyotes wise up because of many reasons, mostly hunter error...

The bullet HP is an excellent caller and very well designed.

I have an older model Wildlife Technologies e-caller that I have used very little. Never seem to have the time.

But coyotes are starting to be a problem and I hope to get serious about calling them.

The caller is not here now so I can't give you the model but it is about 5 years old.

Does anyone here have experience with Wild Life Technologies and it it a good caller?

It sounds good to me, but I have hearing difficulties.
