I have a 17hmr bolt gun and thinking of running a red dot with a magnifier combo the main use will be for varmint hunting. Has anyone done this on a bolt action gun?

Here is a link to what I am thinking.

I would probably go with a 1-4 or a 1-6 with an illuminated reticle.

Tactical,
I agree with that. The thought is when hunting at night and day it would be easier to acquire a target with the red dot/ holographic sight without the magnifier as the majority of my shots are under 100 yards and on fox so they are sometimes hard to acquire in a scope.

That’s what the 1x is for in the 1-4 or 1-6

Cheap magnifiers use cheap glass. The vortex magnifier looks decent... until you have it side-by-side with a Leupold magnifier. The Vortex isn't that cheap either.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Depends on the gun and the use. On my Tavor I have a red dot, I have a magnifier, but rarely use it. I have killed a pig at 200 yards with it, and shoot steel targets out to 300 with ease without the magnifier. I only use the magnifier to go past 300 yards. For fast shooting the red dot can't be beat, at least not yet.

I should add, I love red dots and have several guns setup up with them.. just don't dig the magnifier combo
