Looking for some info on the area of El Sauz. Any have any info on what to expect with deer numbers and general hunting info for this area? Particular area is north of El Sauz on Las Escobas rd.

Lots of poaching and night hunting occurs in Starr county. Some well managed areas with decent surrounding neighbors may be OK. My brother just got off his lease of one season near Rio Grande City, was not impressed with the deer population and quality, about 1000 acres.

Years ago I had a lease there (El Sauz), was a mistake. Only stayed one year. Hunted every weekend and never saw a deer, not one. As usual, illegals caused lots of problems. Land owner’s family was hunting it during the week and probably spot lighting it too. I started bitchin’ about it, and then they stoled all of my stuff (land owner’s family). There are some good places around though. Good luck.

Knew some guys that hunted 3Kac near El Sauz for 2yrs, decent deer but nothing special....as stated above they had issues with poachers which turned out to be LOs EXTENDED family. They busted em with cams and they still denied it....

Even back in the 80s when I was in the BP in Rio Grande City, there were almost zero deer on Las Escobas road. Too easy to access, the west end is on Loma Blanca and all the folks from Roma can make the circuit.

Best bet is further north toward Robert East's place or just south of there around San Roman off of 649. JMO.

edit The part about the illegal traffic is definitely true. We'd catch groups of 10 to 20 up there.

Depends on which property your looking at. There are several big ranches in that particular area that have good herd numbers and big bucks! My friend has his place just down the road and most are high fenced and plenty of exotics as well.

I just want to be honest. My family (mom side)has a large ranch couple of miles south of El Suaz. I've hunted there for over 40 years and I will can tell you this. We're lucky just to see a single doe or even a deer these days. When I was a kid and hunting was just that - hunting I would see tons of deer. We had tons of wildlife of every variety. I loved rabbit and jack rabbits. Now not even rabbits are in abundance. Now this was back in the 70's and 80's.

My family (dad) has a ranch closer to Escobares. About 10 miles south of El Suaz. I've spent more of the 2000's hunting this ranch. I've seen one deer in 20 years. The only thing you can count on are some quail and a rare hog or javelina.

Here is what I believe has happened:
1. Poaching is terrible. It's year round. People are just starving. The high unemployment rate is the driver.
2. Human traffic - we catch illegals all the time. We see them often walking our ranches.
3. Border Patrol - we have them tracking on the ranch all the time. They even walk up to our blinds to check us!
4. Fear - no one wants to report anything. The one time we did. A head of a doe was placed on a post on the gate coming into the ranch. Please explain how a poacher found out we file a report?
5. Like us we don't live on the ranches. The family that did passed away or moved off. Thus, even tho it's a rural area people seen to know when we're there and not. The list is too long on everything we find.

My father is the only one that goes down these days. And two years ago he found out someone lease our our ranch to a group of hunters. Poor guys got a surprise when my father and sheriffs escorted them off with all there stuff.

I'm sorry but this is what I've seen in the past.

It was paradise at one time and I loved being there, but not now.

Be careful and don't leave anything of value there.

I would stay far away from Starr county. The most corrupt county in Texas.

Buddy's place used to be part of the original Tecomate Ranch so are his neighbors all around him. Very good genetics and deer.

Thanks for your honesty, that's why I like this forum. I've seen enough feedback its just not worth risking for the place I was looking at.
