What is the exact process for shipping a firearm? Rifle mainly. Can a seller ship directly to an FFL out of state or does it have to go from my FFL to the buyers?
What about in state? TX

For rifles. In state can be shipped to buyer's front door. Out of state it must be shipped to FFL.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

What about in state? TX Any rifle shipped inside of Texas can go direct to the buyer, and does not need to go through an FFL (though I recommend it does). Any rifle shipment from Texas to out of state is REQUIRED to go through an FFL. ALL handgun shipments MUST go from FFL to FFL, no matter the shipping locations.

Legally, yes. But most FFL's will require the firearm to come from an FFL.

I ran into this situation a couple of years ago when I gave a rifle to my Granddaughters husband. I not only would have to send to a FFL but also pay a sales tax on the perceived value. On our next trip. I took it with me and didn't bring it home.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

What about in state? TX What you will find is that for out of state shipping it is generally easier and many times cheaper to go through your ffl. I have bought and sold many guns online and anymore that is how i do it. However, all ffls charge different rates, so i pays to call around

For out of state a person can overnight a handgun to an ffl, in state a person can ship a handgun to another resident using a carrier like fedex, but pretty sure it still has to be overnighted. I am sure there are a couple of fine points i am missing there, but that is pretty close. I have shipped from me to an out of staate ffl, and had people out of state ship to my ffl. Never done the instate, but have looked it up. All of what i am talking about is handguns. But like I said, it has proven to be cheaper shipping guns through my ffl as they don't have to overnight them, so that is the only way i will ship them now, other than longguns in the state

To ship out of state on the rifle . Ship to the FFL , you should get a signed copy from the FFL . Ship only to the address on the FFL . Bring it to the shipping center , as some places may want to see it . Included a copy of your DL with a signature . That is legal . Most FFL's will take that as it is the same as if you sold it to them in their store .

You however CANNOT use the post office for a handgun . Shipping handguns through a carrier in the state to a resident is the one thing we have discussed in this thread that i have not done. And it very well could be cheaper to go through an ffl anyway.

Well you have always been told wrong. Just looked on atf website, took about three minutes to find the right answer from the source, which is what i listed above. People repeat crap all the time, others listen and continue to repeat the same crap, very few take the three minutes to actually research and find the actual answer

According to my ATF agent that I just spoke with, a handgun MUST go FFL to FFL. inside Texas or outside.
