The Texas chapter had their Spring testing last weekend. I promised the breeder that I would have Rosie (my 11 month old pudelpointer) run the NA test so he could analyze the results of the litter... makes sense to me. I can understand why people would really enjoy the field trial type of thing and I do see how the training applies to hunting. But it isn't my deal and it's the first time I have ever taken part in any of this stuff. The thing I had not considered are the people that you meet. I got to know a bunch of good folks with common interests that I wouldn't have otherwise.

About the test itself... it was pretty obvious that I was the only person there that felt no pressure and also had no idea what was going on or what to do. I did want her to get a fair assessment from the judges for the breeder's benefit, but I personally did not care one way or the other. She is a huntin' fool like me and that is all that matters. Her training (by my very unprofessional self) has been for quail and duck hunting because that's what I do. That combined with her hunting experience in her first season was a big advantage for the water and the field portions of the test. She nailed those for sure. I did not have high expectations for the pheasant tracking part of the test since all she has ever tracked is ducks in hunting situations. On the walk out to the field I was regretting that I hadn't worked with her on it. I was prepared to be embarrassed, especially after watching the 8 dogs ahead of her get messed up with the crazy wind. I decided to use the "dead" command since she understands it with the hope that she would catch and follow the scent. It worked perfectly and she worked to the bird in dense cover and 30 MPH winds in 30 seconds. Even got her to retrieve it to hand, which isn't always the case. I was pretty shocked that she happened to put it all together while judges were watching. It could easily have gone south in a hurry and I would not have been surprised at all.

When it came time for the scores I had no idea where she stood. She received a perfect 112 score! cheers

So my take away is that if she gets screwed up somewhere down the line it's my fault, can't blame her genes.

A maximum score. Outstanding! Nothing makes a hunter happier than a great dog. I recommend paying for the wall plaque from NAVHDA. Its really nice.

Very nice!

I'd really like to go check out a NAVHDA test sometime.

That's awesome LC...we need to see some current pics of Rosie. Congrats to you both, she sounds like quite the companion/hunting buddy!

Thanks and agreed. I wasn't planning on it initially, but most likely I will.

Thanks, she has been great so far... except the constant chewing, but I can live with that.

A few of my favorite pics from late duck season.

Two weekends ago she figured out that when the quail honey holes are a mile apart that the loud scary 4 wheeler is your friend!

Congrats, hopefully this gets you to go further in testing to see what your dog really has.

Good job on the NA, now you are hooked. Got to start training for the UT, it's worth it for a good all around hunting dog.

Wish me luck, we run the UT this weekend.

Thanks! Leo Perez (Pan American) out of Miami, FL.

Coincidentally, he had another litter of six last week from the same dam and different sire. As of yesterday he still had a couple available.
