I think brand will be more important, we used 110 cc 3 wheelers for everything, but the smaller Chinese ones suck. I personally would not go below 300cc and that would only be for riding. If dragging trailers and lots of corn around, I would go bigger.

150 will pull you on level ground but add some corn on it and go up hill and it will be a chore. Also verify the frame height on a 150. Needs to be tall enough to match your terrain.

If all you want to do is get from point A to point B, carry nothing but yourself and won't mind looking like a Shriner in a parade, you'll be fine with a 150.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

We have two Honda Recons (250). They are more than adequate for a 200-250lb rider and occasional bag of corn, and I've hauled two small central TX does on one at the same time (granted not very far and not very fast). If you want to use this for any sort of work I would plan on a trailer; if you want to haul 500lbs of corn you should probably look at the 400 class. I drove the Honda 420 and it is a massive upgrade in power over the 250 but I don't need to run 50mph across the pasture or move a mountain.

I have been using a smaller frame 250 cc 4 wheeler (2WD) as my main lease vehicle for years. I'm 5'11" and 300 lbs, and it works fine for me. It is a little under powered when hauling gear or corn, but still works fine for general use. I like the smaller frames for easy loading and lifting it out of the mud, if needed. My buddy has a small frame 300 CC and his is a little more powerful and hauls more gear. I think the 250cc or 300cc is ideal for regular deer lease use.

Seriously, just light a fire and throw your money into it. I bought a pair of those Chinese ones for my boys hoping they would last a few years and get them to a bigger 4 wheeler neither of them made 6 months of riding by 80lb kids. And no they didn't beat the hell out of them, they where supervised riding around the house.

run far away from the Chinese knockoff anything (motorcycles, ATV, etc.). Most are almost exact clones of some of the top 4 Japanese brands (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki & Yamaha) but fabricated from garbage materials that break/wear out in short order. Likewise, they are considered throw away when something breaks, as parts are typically not readily available (and they are garbage if they are available).

a guy I used to hunt with had a Honda TRX 200 or 250 that would do most anything, just at a slower pace. you might be able to find a clean used one or one that's been sitting for a while that needs the carb gone thru for a reasonable price.

I've got a old 250 Honda 2 wheel drive. I have had two men plus 2 bags corn you just go easy. Went to Colorado it was not big enough. Have to watch if not automatic it will flip you if no weight on front. Good luck in your venture.

I bought a Chinese 350, 9 years ago, ordered it from California. Worked pretty well. Had it fro 2 or 3 years. But because it was chain drive it was a pain in the but and you could not pull a trailer with it because the way it was set up, I sold it. I picked up a 4 year old Suzuki 400 for 2200 bucks. Best thing I did. Since then I have purchsed 2 more, both Polaris one 500 and one 600, in the range of 2000 each with great results. Just look for a good deal on a used 4 wheeler either on this form or craigslist. You can pickup a 2 wheel drive around 1000 on up. and a 4 wheel drive 1500 on up.

as others have said, don't buy chinese atv's or dirtbikes, total waste of money, get a used Jap 4 wheeler
personally, I pull a little trailer behind my riding mower to fill feeder & whatnot
whatever you do don't buy the chinese pos, I helped 2 neighbor boys get theirs going one day, next day they knocked on the door and asked for help with it, 3 hours later it was limping along, 3rd day in a row I told them I quit, what a pos

I used a Fourtrax 250 honda for years in east texas and it never felt underpowered. I pulled trailers with it, loaded corn and deer on the racks, etc. never had a problem.

Buddy bought two of them last year in good shape and they were just as I remembered them. good little machines.

Buying a new one I wouldn't go less than 400cc's and I would really prefer a 650-800 cc machine

I’ve been on everything from a 250 to a 350 to a 500 to a 650 to a 1000. After being on the 1000, everything else seems anemic.

That being said, I’ve never had a problem that the 350 couldn’t solve.

The wife’s ATV is a Suzuki Ozark 250. Great little machine, and we’ve had it for maybe 10 years. Bulletproof. It is, however a bit small, physically, for a 6’ man. I’d go for something a bit larger, like a Honda or Yamaha or Suzuki 400. I have a Honda Rancher (420 cc I think) which replaced a Yamaha Big Bear 400, both of which are plenty big enough.

I have a 220cc Kawasaki and a 300cc Honda and would suggest something in the 300-400cc range for someone your size. You'll want the larger frame and extra cc's to carry yourself and a deer.

I've hauled many a deer and hog out of the woods with my little Kawasaki, but the larger Honda takes it much better.

It's been a while since I've looked at new ATV's but a key consideration is whether or not to go with an automatic. Both of my ATV's are manual shift with auto-clutch shift, which IMO, hold up better to heavy loads. Most of the auto's are belt driven. At last check, the larger Honda auto's use hydraulics.

I don't know of any honda using hydraulics. As far as I know they either have a manual gearbox, or a automatic automotive style with a normal torque converter.

If you plan on ever going hunting in the Mountains you would want to upgrade to a bigger machine.High elevation robs power and steep hills leave you needing more power on anything short of 400 cc. Maybe that is not an option, just food for thought.

I have been using a Honda 300 2wd with a manual transmission for the last 20 years with no problem. It has not been off the ranch since i bought it and have only had to change 1 battery and the tires in that time.

My 300 Polaris (POS) could not even drive off the trailer in the mountains of Colorado.

I’d at least look into something over 300cc, preferably 350 or better and plan to spend a couple grand.
