I added another pan to my collection. It is the oldest one I have now. It looks to be a 3 legged spider pan, by my little bit of knowledge. It is only marked with a gate mark and a raised 2 on the bottom side of the handle. It seems to be in good condition without any holes or cracks. It is rough on the outside has a few rough spots on the inside from the mold, no where near as smooth as my old wagners or BSR’s. I plan on cleaning it up and seasoning it. I was originally thinking late 1800’s, but the only ones I’ve seen like this without a hole in the handle date back even earlier. It has very little rust, all on the surface only. . I know the ones with only a gate mark can be hard to identify, but any other ideas or info?

If you are on Facebook search for "cast iron cooking", there are some of really knowledgeable people on there, just step lightly, there are also a plenty of idiots.

Facebook cast iron groups will give you the info. My mom retired in 02 and one of her hobbies has became cast iron. I have no idea how many pieces she’s obtained but I have over 20 from her “collecting”. Treat it right in restoration and it can be a piece you use and love. I have several over a 100 years old that get used. My favorite is a round griddle that appears hand hammered. Perfect for pancakes at around 8”.

Now that the Facebook groups are out there mom has researched and documented all her pieces. As stated above, these people are serious, you can’t [censored] them.

I enjoy my cast iron. Don't have much and it only goes back to the 60s/ 70s. Fun to know ya have something that will last multiple lifetimes with a minimum of care.

I collect cast iron cookware, mostly Griswald. I’ve never seen a piece like that. Very nice! The feet are gonna make it pretty useless though. Sandblast it, wash in soapy water, rinse and put it on a hot gas grill and season it with lard. Just lard.

The collectors would crucify you for suggesting that you sandblast cast iron.

The first round of the initial cleaning is done. It really doesn’t need anything to aggressive, plus I’m going at it with kid gloves and trying not to do any damage.
All I’ve done so far is diluted vinegar and a synthetic scouring pad. The minor rust came off easy and all that’s left should come off with more elbow grease. It is pretty pitted on the bottom, but the sides are still in nice shape and there are no cracks, holes or damage.
As Cast said, it will not be used as often as others, but, I don’t own any cast iron I don’t use...even if only occasionally.
I have gone to seasoning with avocado oil for most of my pans, but this one will be getting lard. It just seems right.
Here it is and also a pic to compare it to a pre-1960’s finish on a Birmingham Stove and Range pan that I seasoned last weekend.

I know it’s not the most entertaining thread, but it is the off season.

Search "using molasses for rust removal". I think the mix is 9 to 1, but look to be sure. Plenty of instructions on Google.

When my grandpa passed and all the Will conversations started, Mom was talking about her house. I told her “I don’t want this place! I just want the skillets”. She just laughed

Knotted cup brush, on an angle grinder will clean anything off steel or cast iron.

I finished the seasoning on it this evening. I did two rounds and I think it turned out nice. So far, no one is able to identify the year or maker. This is expected with no makers mark. There were tons of people making cast iron during the 1800’s and in to the 1900’s. Anybody (mainly blacksmiths) could buy molds and start making them.
This one is pretty rough and a simple design. Most guesses seem to fall in the mid 1800’s. There are quite a few of the “spider pans” out there. I’m really surprised this one stayed intact thru the years. Most have broken legs or they have been ground down, etc.
it is also quite thin as far as CI goes, which cuts down on the weight a lot. I had 5 pieces that I seasoned this weekend. I try to hold out until I can fill the oven.
Here it is... [Linked Image]

I ended up only using vinegar, a scouring pad and a stainless steel medium toothbrush.
I’ve never used blasting, but I hear it works great. I have used the oven cleaner method (lye), but is is messy. Wire wheels and discs work great, especially on newer lodges and others that are naturally rough and need some smoothing out. I have been using the Avanti Pro disc on my corded drill with great results. Happy hunting and cooking.

For refurbishing I soak in vinegar, pour all but a dab out, then add a couple of Tbs of salt, scour with a dish towel, rinse, repeat if needed.

Mom uses a big plastic barrel with lye water and a battery charger. I don’t know the details on the set up but it works. General consensus is as you stated, they are impossible to date due to home casting. Late 1800s for that mold but it could have been cast anytime since. Nice piece.

That’s similar to what I did. I was running low on vinegar, so I soaked paper towels and lined the pan evenly and let it sit for 30 minutes or so, instead of soaking. Check, scour, repeat as needed. I think the inside took three rounds and the outside only one. The paper towels help keep everything even as the vinegar works and I don’t get the discoloration vinegar can cause. They also keep it from drying out if you’re not soaking it.
