If a doe smells right there will be a buck ready to chase her. Some does might go through a few cycles befoe bred and there are always those early doe fawns that often cycle in this time of year and is where you see some of the real small young fawns from.

All I know is I see spotted fawns every year in late September in San Saba County. If that deer is 3 months old, and gestation is 5.5 months, his mamma did the wild thing in January.

The buck ignored a full grown doe that was apparently interested in him. She was bouncing all over the place. The other three does were the three that we refer to as “mom and the twins”. I don’t know which of the three he was hot for, but they all jumped the fence and headed for the next zip code.

To the best of my knowledge, this place has a reasonable balance of males and females, so I had assumed that the rut must be over by now.

The past 2 days I've watched a very large buck chasing does.

Just returned from NE Webb Co. Still very active scrapes and rubs, chasing and lots of broken antlers. Very few were broken when we were down there in January. I attribute all the fighting to the rut winding down and very few does left to cycle. Buncha frustrated bucks.

The rut isn’t controlled by rules from Parks and Wildlife, so there is no “legal” to consider. The rut doesn’t stop with the last day of the season.

Some doe fawns will be old enough and large enough by body weight to breed this time of the year. I watched a doe fawn being chased by two bucks the first week of March on a large low fence ranch back about 18 yrs ago now.

Gestation is closer to 200 days long.

So...That would result in a .5 fawn? grin
Thinking most of ours are "long-bred" by now, but I'm still seeing a little interest in a scrape near a fence line.

That's crazy. I'm sure it was quite a sight. Was that in the Postoak woods around Hawley? Just curious. That always looked like good deer country.

Walking my property in Houston Co 2 weeks ago I found scrapes with fresh activity. It was fresher than the last rain, which has been happening about every 30 minutes it seems for the last 6 months

We see rutting activity in February every year. Couple years ago we drove up on a doe with a still wet new born fawn that couldn't stand yet in late august/early September if I remember right. I think according to the 200 day gestation that would put it being bred mid February.

I saw two med-age bucks freshly killed on the road at Coleman last weekend. High probability there was a female involved, those were the only dead deer I saw in 270 miles.

Bucks are still coming to the horns. I rattled one right on top of me last weekend.

My wife told me that a big buck chased a doe past the front of the house a couple of days ago. She said the doe was “flying low”, but the buck was at a medium trot (think Pepe Le Pew).
