Big mature doe. Broadside. 500 yards. In your blind you have 6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm Rem Mag. Same optics. Which would you shoot and why?

Both, just to make sure.

Actually I've never been mad enough at a deer or had any reason to shoot one 500 yards away.
So I'd climb down out of the blind walk over to the pickup, get my 7-08 walk up on the doe within 100 - 120 yards & shoot her in da face.

This^^^^

Too many opportunities at 50-150 yards for me to let lead fly 500....

At that range I might throw my beer at it

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I do not have either caliber and would still not shoot any deer at that range if I did have one of them. I have enough does that I would wait on one to come in much closer or try to stalk within range of that doe.

Change the scenario from a fat doe to a pig or coyote at 750 yards...I’d grab the closest rifle and let the lead fly....if I missed and had a second shot I’d adjust then let it fly again.. cheers

If you throw a tall boy is that considered a magnum?

Lived this exact scenario a couple years ago, except I had a 270. I knew she was over 400 yards but didn't have a range finder. The wind was in my favor so I climbed down and got closer. I ended up making about 170 or so yard high shoulder shot drt.

Personally wouldn't shoot that far at deer at my current shooting ability.

I am the same. I would never take a shot at a deer over 300 yards away. I respect the animals way too much to do that.

Next question please.

Regardless of caliber, why would anyone attempt a 500 yard shot on a doe from a blind?

Ok, change the circumstances to this;

Your on a 21 day hunt in New Zealand for a Arapawa ram. You spent $24,000 for the hunt and your on your last day and the only shot you have had is right in front of you across the valley 500 yards away. You can't attempt to get any closer without getting busted and your losing sun light. Which of the two would you pick?

They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason! nidea

My self imposed limits for a "well" animal (not previously wounded) are 50 yards w/handgun and 200 w/ rifle. Only if conditions are right. $24k ? I'd add to it and buy more land. 7mag? Sold it some 38 years ago. CM-no interest.

Now.......change that to a hog or song dog, I just might lob one out there, most likely .30-'06

That's an easy one.
I wouldn't pay $24,000 to hunt anything on the planet.
I'd buy a bottle or two of some fine whisky or tequila, top quality steaks & fixins invite a couple friends over to watch the sunset later on sit around a nice fire eating, sipping & talking & laughing.
I'd be grinning the whole time thinking about the 23,600 or so $ still in my bank account.

Only reason to shoot 500 yards at a deer is if it's inside a high fence and you can't get closer.

With a $24,000 dollar budget, and the deer was a booner then you could afford the fine and restitution, and still have money left over to lick your wounds.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

What response is the OP’s question trying to get at?

Shoot whatever rifle you have the most confidence & experience with.

Is it just me, or does it seem there are almost as many shooters on this forum as there are hunters?

If you spent $24k then you already killed more animals than just a wool sheep. You could save the $1200 for that ram and go to Thompson temple and get one for $400

But at that range, if you had a good rest, a capable rig and a spotter, take the shot if you want.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

It must be you, because so far for serious answers it's 7 to 1 against taking the shot.
