It depends on where in Taylor county. Could be really good.

I looked at a place for sale 2 weeks back about 30 miles south west of Abilene. The property was set up well with 2 large wheat fields and good cover in between with plenty of water. This place was covered up with pigs though. Every road and field had sign of pig everywhere and we saw a few driving around. I didn’t see any deer but saw some game pics and pics of a few taken. They did take a respectable deer this past season but the numbers didn’t seem impressive. I would imagine as you move closer to bronte, paint rock and south, numbers would improve. Oh, and the rattlesnake population is just as high as the hog population on that place.
The other turn off for me was the neighboring properties. I counted over 10 stands on the fence as we drove the perimeter. It appeared this place was surrounded by smaller acerage that could be putting a lot of pressure on the animals in that specific area. Just like many areas across the state, it appears like Taylor County is being sold off into smaller parcels, 100-300 acre tracks..

Merkel is about 15 mi W of Abilene.
Lawn is about 20-23 mi S.
Abilene State park is about 20mi SSW.

277 & fm 89 puts you about 20 - 24 mi SW of Abilene.

If you need a lease & don't mind a 3.5 hour drive probably worth going to take a look.

West and north of Abilene holds some monsters. I'm talking 170s+ are killed every year with the occasional 180+. I've got pictures of a lot of them. Most of these are taken in Jones county but the north western county line is the start of this area.

South of Abilene there tend to be more deer but in general I don't hear about or see really big deer taken in that area.

I've seen some nice deer taken east of Abilene as well near the Callahan county line.

However, I have seen a few nice deer taken south. On a bigger place that's been managed it could be good.
