Was out of town camping with my wife and two GSPs. Wife tossed the ball and our younger dog (3.5 yrs) came back with the ball and a severe limp followed shortly by a lot of swelling. I drove her to the Vet for X-Rays Saturday morning. Vet said that it is a rare break and we are currently waiting to hear from the Orthopedic Surgeon for appt. she is taking it well but most likely gonna be a long road to recovery.

Sorry to hear. Hoping the surgery goes smoothly and the vet works cheap.... I've never seen a Orthopedic surgeon that works cheap. Hope all goes well.

First ortho can’t see her for two weeks. Second ortho can’t see her til Thursday, wants 5,000 to fix leg with zero guarantees and 3,500 to amputate.
Guy, we really aren’t sure what happened. My wife tossed the ball over her Jeep. (Obstructed view) The dog ran around the Jeep, retrieved the ball and came back with a broken leg. The area the ball was tossed into was a flat grassy area without obstructions. The ball probably went 20yards or less. She did not come in contact the vehicle either. “Izzy” is a hard charging 150mph running ball of energy. She doesn’t do anything with any degree of reserve and charges head first and full speed ahead. I’m guessing the leg snapped during a full speed course correction but can’t say for sure as we didn’t actually see what happened.
Thanks for all the well wishes but so far it’s not going well.. I’ll keep y’all updated.

Sorry to hear about your friends injury. That is going to be a tough path, regardless of which you choose. I own 1/3 interest in a GPS, that lives with one of my hunting buddies. He broke a rear knee and required surgery. It was pinned and wired. He had an external fixation for about 8 weeks, then a split cast for 6 weeks. $7000 by the time it was all done He's back to normal now, but it took quite a while to build his endurance back up. The vet wrap was required to keep him from getting it caught up in the wire of his crate. Of all the rough terrain he hunts, he did this in the back yard, chasing a squirrel. He ran straight into a rock retaining wall.

The locations where the pins penetrate the skin had to have antibiotic ointment put on them daily, then they had to be thoroughly cleaned weekly, and all of his hardware tightened with a wench....that was a two person job. Never off the leash for almost 3 months, and that included just going into the back yard to pee. Cone 24/7 He as a trooper through all of it. By the end of the first week, he had adjusted to his new routine. The real star was my hunting buddy's wife...she's an angle to put up with all this dog stuff, especially when she was left caring for Chip during the day, while my buddy was at work. Good luck on this. It takes a lot to care for a dog after this type of surgery. Chip has hunted this season and looks good in the field. No residual pain that we can tell. No limp when he runs, other than, if he hunts really hard, but the end of the day his stride has shortened a little and me might favor it a little after you get him back in from hunting.

Wow Nak, that looks a lot more involved than what they are telling us we are in for. Izzy is going in for surgery tomorrow. Basically they are inserting a rod or screw to hold the bone together and maybe a cast. They said they would evaluate aftery surgery. She has to stay on meds and off the leg for 6-8 weeks. They want her as immobile as possible and on leash whenever she goes outside to potty.
I’m glad your boy is doing well. Do you have any x-ray pics? Who did the surgery?

They understated the care required for Chip also. My buddy and his wife were surprised and overwhelmed originally. He was caught completely off guard by the external hardware and the open wound care that was required for almost two months

I had a toy fox terrier jump off my boat while on the trailer, to the concrete. Snapped her little front leg in half. Total damage for pins screws surgery and emergency vet was around 4k. Honestly it was worth every penny. Had to go to that specialist place in dallas. I'd do it again in a heartbeat for my dogs.

Amazing all the crazy stuff dogs do hunting, then they get hurt doing something simple.

They called yesterday afternoon and said the surgery went well. She got a plate and screws with no external hardware. She will have to wear a cast for at least the first month and they will re-evaluate at that time. We are supposed to pick her up sometime this afternoon. I asked for copies of the x-rays. If they provide them I’ll post them up. We are looking forward to having her home. Thank you for the advice and call; I really appreciate the insight.
