We have some free range Stag that show up at our place every winter/spring. Several pictures at night around feeders, only been a rare sighting or two at a distance during the day. I assume their mating season is the fall here, same as most others. Ruger has some Stag sounds on their iHunt app that requires a $50 speaker. I've thought about trying to download and play some of the stuff from the Aussies on YouTube on something I have, but don't really know what I'm doing with either option and liable to scare more off than I call in. Any ideas/recommendations on calling/grunting to try?

They are an exotic animal which means they are fair game to shoot at night! Some don,t think that is sporting, but I just want them in the freezer, so no big deal to me! Good luck!

We've all agreed not to shoot 'em at night, now close to sunup, just after sunset... might be close. I just want them in close enough to have a chance at a shot.

I've never tried this for hunting, but one time we bought a new goat and she escaped as soon as we let her go inside our pasture. We thought that she was long gone, but then saw her hanging around outside the fence, sort of wanting to join the other goats. My wife went to youtube on her phone and played goat sounds. This goat was a couple hundred yards away and heard her phone, and walked right towards here, following the sound. She opened the gate, walked into the pasture and that goat kept following her all the way in.

YouTube has a bunch of Red Stags roaring that you might just play off of your phone. Maybe get a blutooth speaker for more sound if you want it, but I'm guess that your phone will be powerful enough for them to hear it.

I've hunted free-ranging red deer in Europe, the South Pacific, and South America...a fair bit of experience with them.
May I suggest you try calling as you would for our North-American elk...try even now. I would ease into it with soft, intermittent cow elk vocalizations, which you can do with very small, simple and inexpensive mouth calls. Since their roaring is not very similar to our bull elk vocalizations, I'm not sure how they will react to the latter.
Please let us know what happens! Good luck!

p.s., you might directly contact some of the Texas ranches that have breeding populations of red deer; they should be able to give you some good advice.

The "roar" which is their rut is generally in September, you'll know when they're rutting it's unmistakable. Like previously said, there's loads of youtube videos with them roaring and even some apps with calls. Exactly what EddieWalker said before, you could get by with a bluetooth speaker. Check out the app NZ Game Calls. If you've got some open property to hunt you could try spotting them with a thermal at night.
