Iíve noticed several of my plugs arcing when I plug something into them. My house was built in th 70s so itís fairly old. When I moved in 4 years ago I had an electrician out to do some work and had him put in the proper ground. Back then they didnít put in ground rods. This is happening at several different plugs in my house. No breakers are tripped. Do you think I need a electrician to check out the situation?
Thanks

Guys, I was a residential electrician in the 70ís and wiring several houses a week. Believe me, every job we did had an 8í copper ground rod installed correctly. I drove them in myself and attached a #6 copper wire between it and my service. The arc you see when plugging in a load is normal. Once plugged in, it certainly should not arc.

As I type this I sit in my lake house that I wired in the early 80ís. I replaced a 20 amp GFI breaker yesterday because it tripped when using my electric smoker. That is, so far, the only repair needed here.

My house was built in 89-90....

Five years ago we gutted the place and started over....I found two hot legs just laying inside the walls. Several plugs wired backwards and/or ungrounded....

A voltmeter is your friend but canít find everything someone did wrong....

I still have a couple switches that I cannot find what they go to and plugs/outlets without power....

My old house did that. It was aluminum wiring. They get loose.

Just guessing, but I expect the wall plugs are worn out. There a spring like devices that grab the male end of the appliance plug. Over time the springs become weak and will not grip properly giving you a loose connection. Often the male end of the appliance cord will melt.

Along with what Lazyjack suggested see if whatever youíre plugging in is on. Youíll get a arc (noticeable or not) if the device or whatever youíre plugging in is on.

The only way to weaken the springs is to heat them. Overload the 15 amp plug on a 20 amp circuit is pretty common. There are different connectors for 15 and 20 amp circuits. Donít mix em up. And donít buy the cheap stuff when youíre wiring something to last a lifetime.

Yep, they lose their spring over time and use and then they can heat up due to loose connections.
