Mallow. I never heard of it. My Ibex must be picky as they won't touch it.

Dang, not the thread I thought this was going to be, lol What you were thinking of makes you mellow so it would be a mellow weed, not a mallow weed.

I notice that I have a couple of those plants behind the house here in Menard County. When he gets as wet as it did last fall, we are going to see a lot of strange plants pop up. There is going to be a bumper crop of burr clover in the flats, great deer feed but can cause cattle to bloat. Adios, Gary

Not sure I want to try it but: "Edible parts: All parts of this plant are edible. The leaves can be added to a salad, the fruit can be a substitute for capers and the flowers can be tossed into a salad. When cooked, the leaves create a mucus very similar to okra and can be used as a thickener to soups and stews. The flavour of the leaves is mild. Dried leaves can be used for tea. Mallow roots release a thick mucus when boiled in water. The thick liquid that is created can be beaten to make a meringue-like substitute for egg whites. Common mallow leaves are rich in vitamins A and C as well as calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and selenium." Link

It may be edible but I've never seen our stock eat it, and if they won't then I'm probably not trying it!

^It certainly does look similar. Geranium has leathery leaves though. Mallow is more waxy leaved.

I took some pics last week of the Mallow on my place in Live Oak County. You can see clearly that something is eating to tops off of it. The only animals that have access to it around this water trough are cattle, deer or hogs. There is some inside the old homestead area where deer or hogs only can get to it and it is not grazed on. The Mallow in that area is knee deep and the grazed area is about 6" tall. So I would have to guess cattle will eat it.

Here a few pics from the end of last week of the same Mallow on my place. The two photos above were just inside the gate about 3-4 weeks ago and this one shows how much the cattle have eaten those same plants. Not sure why but they start eating one place then stay on that one spot more so than others. Could be the amount of "fertilizer" around the water trough is differen in spot vs. the others. The cattle can not get to this side of the gate.
