.17 Fireball for HF, .460 Weatherby for low fence.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

If you're not hunting public with a 50 cal., you're doing it wrong Of course. You must go for the eye ball extraction shot as to not ruin meat. You know, the shot where the bullet passes by so fast, the shock waves from the bullet extracts the eyes from the eye sockets, while sending shock waves to the brain for a DRT kill. Only the most tactifool hunters are capable of this feat.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Soooooooo if I hunt in a HF would 223 be enough? Is it ethical to shoot a deer in a pen with a 22 caliber?
Only if you lure them in within petting distance with a bag of Cornnuts.

Only if you lure them in within petting distance with a bag of Cornnuts. I have killed many HF deer with a sling shot so a 223 is prob overkill.

Does using Indian corn make a difference?

Does using Indian corn make a difference? Not as much as apple flavored corn. I myself prefer to use popcorn, during the summer months it gives the deer something different to munch on, and after sitting in a metal drum for a while, it provides a nice treat for the hunter when filling feeders.

What about public lands, 300Wby as a starting point? You bring up some good questions big pig. It's a good thing you posted as you obviously have your wires crossed. 1. Yes .223 is enough in a high fence but seldom used. (See question 4) 2. No it is not ethical to shoot deer in a pen with a .223. You need a hammer. (Ball peen or claw) 3. Low fence hunters should all use open sighted 30-30 lever guns. 4. Any Wby is far to expensive to use on public land and should only be used inside a high fence. Those are basics. I think they are taught in hunter education.

To save as much of the valuable meat as possible on the HF hunt, you wait until the deer is next to a tree and then bark'em with that .50 caliber.

Hmmmm, I will be your friend on this. .308 to the grave, All the way. No questions asked.
Recently got a gym membership, strange folks! I like to show up the roid zombies with my full motion curls with the 55lb. bells. Not their cheater short stroked light weights. It's holarious.
