I was surprised I did not see any today when I was out and about in Live Oak County. It was 87 for an afternoon high and I was watching the ground closely every where I went in the areas with tall weeds. I would bet there was a few laying on top of rat dens if I had ventured around enough. We had frost two mornings ago now and then 87 today.
Nice pic. I was out mowing a couple of days ago along some fence line and spotted a 4' Buttermilk Racer beating a retreat. I got down and tried to catch it but it made it down a hole before I could close the distance. It had been pretty cool that morning but the afternoon sun warmed things up just enough to coax some of the critters out.

Yes. They vary widely in contrast color (here) the one I saw the other day was mostly blueish-gray without much of the contrasting speckles. But I was checking game cameras a couple of years ago (in the very same area) and walked up on one. It was in November and sort of a cool day. The snake was kind of bunched up and had its head covered. I watched it for a moment and it never moved, I mean not even a twitch. I was afraid maybe it was dead....so I nudged it with my shoe. NOPE...out came its head and it popped me on the side of my foot! Very much alive!
I tailed it and after it settled down a bit (hard for a racer to do) I got a couple of pics and then set it free. Next time I'll wear boots when I go down there...but this is just behind my house a few hundred yards and I had slipped on some deck shoes.
Anyway, we both went our separate ways..no worse for the wear. Snakes have always fascinated me.
I disturbed a copper head sleeping under a firewood log last month. It's sleeping for ever now!
We have copperheads out the Wazoo....where I am. So I am pretty much always watching for them.
Generally speaking...I leave them alone unless they are right up around the house or down around my shop area. I keep the lawn mowed short and well away from all buildings but a few still make the venture out of the pasture or wooded areas.
I was trimming some Privet Hedge back away from my shop one time and had one actually advance toward me (very unusual), it gathered itself into an 'S' shape and started feigning strikes my direction from about 4' away.
Normally, I would have just relocated it...but this one I took offense to. Acting all pissy like that.
I had a small chainsaw with me and when the snake refused to crawl away...I revved the saw up and let the snake strike at that. Learned a lesson that day too. IF you decide to use a chainsaw on a snake be certain to use the TOP of the bar! Otherwise the chain will snatch the snake right back around your feet!
