I have 2 antique Winchesters, one is a family heirloom. I've never really given either rifle a thorough cleaning and I wondering if I should, particularly the barrels. I'd like some advise on cleaning these rifles. If its ok to clean the barrels, is it ok/safe to use some of the modern products that remove copper? I fairly confident that both rifles are in sound working order and would be safe to shoot today, heck I have ammo for one of them that's over 100 years old, I'm sure that ammo will fire just like it did the day it was made, right???? I don't know maybe I'll hold off shooting the ammo I have.
Seriously, I would like some advise on the potential good or harm I may do to either rifle if I were to try and clean them. I'm not looking to remove any of the character/patina.

Call Johnny Dury at Dury's Gun Shop in San Antonio 210-533-5431. Johnny is an expert on all things antique and collectible when it come to firearms. Tell him Chris Mahfouz sent you. If you can't get ahold of Johnny, ask for Laura and tell her why you're calling. She'll run Johnny down for you.

I have, and have had quite a few old Winchesters some made in the 1870's and this is the guide I pretty much follow. http://blog.cheaperthandirt.com/caring-for-your-historic-firearm/
