Well guys the javalina hunt at the chap is in 3 weeks.

I really dont care too much about javalina. They are super easy to hunt and I am 100% positive it will be easy as pie for me to bag a trophy jav.

My question is more about location and best fields to choose for hogs. Like I said I am not in to javalina as much as I am in to hogs. What pasture is known for the most hogs? or what area? I have heard there are some warthogs on the west side. That would be cool but all I care about is hunting feral hogs.

Just ask the staff when you are picking your compartment. They will definitely let you know which blind in your compartment will have the most hogs. If that staff person doesn't know then ask a different staff member. Hogs can be great at one stand in November then be void in January at that same stand. Best to ask.

We have hunted it 3 times. for deer, and really like one compartment for seeing hogs and Javi's. I believe it is number 8. It is a long narrow compartment that runs East and West, I think it would be the lower part of South Jay. Has a road all the way from the hill on the west side, down to the bottom, and back up a long hill to the east side where it runs into the paved road again. The bottom has a pond and a super thick creek bottom, several comfortable elevated Youth blinds along that road. Lots of stink pigs all over, and the hogs enjoy the back side of the pond.

We hunted #8 last year and we saw the biggest pig I have ever seen and thats saying something because I have killed and seen a whole lot. There are a ton of pigs that cross that road.

The pigs are very nocturnal at the Chap. Every unit I have ever hunted there had had tons of pig sign. Have fun the Chap is one of my favorite places to hunt.

It is sounding like #8 is a good unit for hogs.

Few questions: I signed up by myself. Will they assign me with other hunters for a unit? Just curious about safety and other hunters when sharing a compartment?

I assume you can not shoot down any roads for safety or is that not correct?

Each time we have been there, they have tried to give each permit holder their own compartment; i.e.- if there are 4 of you on the permit, they would want to give you a bigger area. On our rifle hunt and archery hunt, there were several single hunters with their own compartment. I can't speak for a Javi hunt tho. No experience there.

First answer is regular gun safety - you do not want to shoot towards, along, or across the paved roads which are typically what establishes the unit boundaries. The brush is very thick, and you may have vehicles on them you will not see or hear. An advantage of the elevated Youth box blinds is that you are shooting down, into the ground. Along ponds or creeks, typically you have a bank backstop.

The roads WITHIN your compartment are your senderos and you will not have any traffic in your compartment, except yourself. Corning a hundred yards in all four directions on a junction should give you lots of scent, and maximum visibility, if you want to set up your own blind or tripod.



This was a big one from our archery deer hunt, right in the middle of the thick brush in Unit 8. Right at 40#

How did the hunt go?

Well i picked #8 and that led all the way to the food plot next to seco pond. Beautiful area. I had a great time but never saw a darn thing. Not a single deer or javalina or pig. Nothing ate the 5 bags of corn I put out either. When i pulled out on sunday about 10 am the total was 14 javalina and a few coyotes. Not too good for 41 groups. I think the animals were just completely nocturnal and probably not much in my area at the time.

Like i said i had a great time and learned a lot about how i would hunt their if i get picked for a major category


My goal was to shoot some pigs and learn. I at least accomplished one of my goals so it was worth it.

Did anyone get or see a warthog?

I'm shocked at that report. I know it has been a weird year with the rain and extra feed and all, but unheard of on the Chap not to see at least a lot of deer and Javi's both. I would have thought with that many people hunting, the cooler would have been packed to the rafters!

I didnt hear of any from the park guys before I left.

You can go to a great fishing spot and get skunked. It is all about timing.

I corned in several places on that long road down to the pond and it was just crazy that they never found that corn. The only reason is they just werent there.

I sat one morning and one afternoon in the blind along the game fence on the west side of #8 and I can see how that should be a deer mecca and it would be a great place to be during the rut.

Saw some beautiful birds also. It was all I had to look at. LOL

Thanks for the report. I have hunted the chaparral several times and always had a great time. It did not matter if I pulled the trigger or not.

Second that. My last trip down was the YDE hunt for the two grandkids. I had a video camera going in both directions with my grandson, and my son (professional photographer) recorded everything of his daughters on the other side of the compartment. Hours of video, beautiful animals and fantastic bird life. There are very few as pretty as this emerald jays, but the cardinals and pyrrohuxlia come close too.

Are the emerald jays the one with the blue head and green body? those were beautiful!! So were those birds with the bright yellow underbelly and tail. I watched them eat my corn for hours. Wow somehow that last sentence doesnt sound ethical. LOL

I bet they were Green Jays.
